      Default Western diamondback or Mojave?

A friend of mine took that picture while he was in Tuscan, Arizona. How do you tell the difference between the two species? I suppose I should specify more so than I did in the title: is it C. atrox or C. scutulatus?

      Here's another picture of it:

Of course he posted all this on Facebook and had plenty of people posting up how many they'd killed and "why didn't you kill it?" It drives me nuts! Why I even start "arguments" with ignorant people like that I don't know because it never goes anywhere... you all understand how it is.

I saw that and that's why I was asking because I couldn't tell. I THOUGHT based on reading that it was probably a WDB, but the guide that did the hike told my friend it was a Mojave so I wasn't sure. I figured you all would know best!

They are pretty but not fun on a hike I live in "TUCSON" az. and have to worry about these guys when hiking with my pit"s all the time a little scary but my dogs know what snakes are and not to get to close from us with the boas at home so hopefully nothing ever happens.

Well, personally I will have to go with the Mojave or C. scutulatus.

The Mojave and Diamondback rattlers are both very similar, however the Mojave's diamond pattern tends to fade toward the last third of the body, where as the Diamondback's diamond pattern tends to stay more promenant throughout the entire body.

Also the Mojave's tail usually has more white than black and vice versa with the Diamondback.

So, just my opinion, but from what I see in the pics I'm going with Mojave on this one.

That is very interesting indeed. I know very little about hots but if they are so similar in appearance and overlap habitat, what is the protocol for an envenomation?

We only have one rattler in my neck of the woods.

Crotalus viridis oreganus, or Hopi Rattlesnake aka Northern Pacific Rattlesnake.

"The Mojave rattlesnake can easily be mistaken for the Western Diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox), which inhabits an overlapping range. They both have well-defined light-edged diamonds down the middle of their backs. The diamond pattern fades towards the last third of the Mojave Rattlesnake, whereas the diamonds continue to the tail in the Western Diamondback. The tail of the Mojave has contrasting light and dark rings. The white rings are much wider than the black rings, while the Diamondbacks have thick black rings."
