Default Can you refreeze a thawed mouse/rat?

      All:

Curious, if you thaw a mouse/rat and the snake does not eat it, can you refreeze?

      Thanks,
      Dave

I would say no. When you allow the rat to warm up, it allows the bacteria to multiply. If you refreeze it, it won't kill the bacteria, just slow it down. Then when you allow it to warm back up, the bacteria (which is already high) starts multiplying again. The way I see it, I wouldn't refreeze my steak, chicken, or pork so there is no way I would refreeze a mouse or rat.

I personaly wouldnt as bactria would have already started! But heres a question for u with out sounding rude but if u defrost a peice of meat for dinner and didnt want it....would u refreeze it? Im just little picky i only give my snake bottled water coz in all honestly i wouldnt give my snake somthing i wouldnt touch myself(water over here is awful) and i know i wouldnt touch a peice of refrozen meat!

its just my opion but a rat over here cost 1 euro maybe 2 max! them two euros are alot less than any vet bill i might get or the mess i have to clean coz my snake puked the rat back up (havnt had it first hand yet but i heard it stink to high heaven) or even the death of a snake dure to bad food! to me its just not worth the risk! if i had the choice of 2 euros or one of the loves of my life...i know which one id choose!

No, toss it. It's not worth the risk of illness.

Can you refreeze it? Sure. You just have to stick it back in the freezer. It'll freeze.

Should you? Probably not. Too much risk for too little reward.

Also, don't offer a refused prey item to another animal. You run the risk of cross contamination if the first boa isn't well. Which is quite likely if it's refusing food.

There's only a few reasons for a boa to refuse food:
      1) it's not established (which means new to your collection which means you may not be 100% positive it's healthy). IMO, many people have boas which have been in their collection for quite a while and they're still not established.
      2) it's overfed and doesn't want to eat (that's on the keeper and is probably the least risky as far as cross contamination goes)
      3) it's in breeding season and doesn't want to eat (the one with the second least risk of cross contamination but it's still there - after all, if it's been in with another animal for breeding you've doubled your chances of it having something and you don't know it)
      4) it's sick (holy crap! MAJOR risk there. Quite often, boas are sick or at least compromised and due to their hardy nature - we don't even know it).

So again, the best solution with an uneaten prey item is to toss it in the trash.

Boas are opportunistic feeders and they will literally eat themselves to death. So to see a boa not eat who you believe, should eat, should send up a red flag if it's not breeding season (which it is right now so it could be nothing).

Thanks for the feedback. Just for the record, all three of my boa's are good eaters. It was when I was trying to feed by Kenyan Sand boa that the "what if" came to mind. She likes to play around with her food for about 10 min before she actually settles in (geesh, my hog and red tail eat lickety split, blink and you miss it). My first thought would be what you all said -- throw it away, do not refreeze. I thought exactly what angry penguin and antiquity thought in the post below. Even so, I thought I'd get confirmation from the collective forum mind that I wasn't being to anal and protective. I also agree with all the other posts to my question.

Thanks all, I appreciate all your responses!

      Dave

Or you could always feed it to another snake?.... if need be... I personally haven't had to do this yet *knock on wood* lol but I have heard of other owners doing so if needed.
