      Default RIP Annika

I lost Annika last night. She was a total sweetheart, a gentle giant. RIP baby.

I'm very sorry for your loss...any idea what the cause was? Had she been sick? Or just age?

      Thank you both.
She started loosing a little weight, but not much… She refused a meal about a week ago… She urinated three times in about ten days… After I cleaned the cage and bathed her a few days ago she bled from the mouth a little… Two days later, she was gone.
She was more active than usual the past few days, and had been on the warm side a couple times as well. Other than that, and the urination I didn’t notice any changes in her behavior.
She was only 12, but large (10+ feet, 52 lbs).
Any ideas on what could have caused her death would be appreciated.
      Thanks.

My Condolences Joe. I know it sucks when you loose a pet snake you have had for a long time.

Not sure what would cause her to died as I don’t know her history. The bleeding from the mouth could mean she had and bad infection / lacerations in the lungs or maybe a blood clot burst in her. She was over weight for her age so that could have caused some of the problems to. All the bigger boas (over 50 lbs.) I have owned over the years all died young 10 to 15 years old. All of them died with babies in them to.

      Take care

Wow, that's a very sad surprise...and not much warning that anything was going on. Let me think about it some, as to what might have happened. The first thing
that comes to my mind when someone says "weight loss" is some kind of cancer. The urates don't sound abnormal, if she was drinking water but not eating...did they
look normal? IF it was cancer of some kind, I would think it would be in the upper G.I. (gastro/intestinal) region, and the bleeding from her mouth could signify that too.

If she had stomach cancer, it's very possible that when you handled her for the bath, it forced a little blood upwards...& that's what you saw from her mouth; also, the
internal organs of snakes are elongated as is their overall body shape...so it might be very hard to tell the difference [by appearance] if a cancer was taking over her
stomach, especially given that she was rather husky. Hindsight being 20:20, the increase you noted in her activity for a few days was probably a sign of internal dis-
comfort (ie. pain). Snakes are so stoic, we just cannot always know what's going on until it's too late. Sorry for your untimely loss, Joe.

Many years ago I had a male Doberman Pinscher that died rather suddenly of cancer: it was mostly in his liver, which was very enlarged, but nothing was visible or
abnormal looking from the outside...as you know, Dobies have very deep chests. He went to the vet to have his teeth cleaned, & only when he was on the table did the
vet think something looked wrong (enlarged) & asked me to o.k. an X-ray. The vet gave me the bad news, that he'd probably only live a month or several at most, but
Jake (my dog) passed a few days later. Some diseases are just so sneaky...Rest in Peace, sweet Annika.

I agree with Noellet 7206 about it could be some kind of cancer I did not even think of that at first. I did have a very nice looking boa die that always seemed healthy to cancer in 2009. He stopped eating which was very strange for him as he never refused food. He look bloated and lethargic so I soaked him in warm water and he did poop a little. However with in 10 days he was dead and he was only 6 years old. My Vet did a necropsy on him and found a tumor.

That's really sad, to lose one that's only 6 years old. Where was his tumor located? With such vague symptoms, snakes can be a challenge to diagnose.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I just lost a 1 year old to my stupidity I think. I cried a lot. Broke my heart. And my 9 year old daughters too.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Tom and Noelle, thank you very much for your much respected insight. My initial thoughts were that it was a tumor/cancer or some type of internal organ failure. I do believe that her weight was a contributing factor to her demise, as I had unsuccessfully been addressing that issue for longer than I care to admit. A close inspection of the enclosure showed tiny droplets of blood splatter, consistent with forced exhalations. Her urine and urates looked normal, and I assume that she was drinking more to flush her system in some fashion. I concur that her unusual activity was a sign of discomfort. Activity simply was never her thing.
