Default question about animal plastics cages..or any pvc cage really.

I need to get a few larger cages this next year. But, due to some unforeseen problems(my son needs a 2 thousand dollar bridge for his front teeth) I will have to save up in fits and starts.

So here is my idea. I want to buy a t8 or t10 for my female and then in another year buy another of the same cage and attach it to make one long cage.Im pretty handy, I can ghetto rig just about anything. Does anyone think this is possible?
Ive got an AP rack but never had one of their cages but assume its made from the same material?

The only reason I dont consider making my own is because my back is in bad shape these days.

I'd think it should be possible.

Simplest way I can think of would be to screw braces between the cut cages and then use aquarium silicone to seal the inside / the cages together.

As far as I know PVC can also be "welded" together but I'm unsure how.

My biggest concern would be making Very accurate cuts.

I was thinking AP sent the cages unbuilt and then the buyer screws and silicones them together?
If that would be the case then no cutting should be involved?? Just unscrew one end and use a razorblade for the caulking or silicone seal.

I know the rack was really easy to put together.

Sounds very do-able to me. I have seen cages for large breeding pairs of boas that are made to convert from one huge cage to 2 separate ones. Just make sure there's no sharp plastic edges...coat or
sand them. I can't speak for what AP racks & cages are made from (whether it's the same) but it's not hard to just ask them. Sorry about your son needing such pricey dental work...ouch! and take care of
      your back!

The only "issue" I can think of is the strength & stability of the larger resulting cage...it might need some bracing added. But I'd try it if that was me.

Thanks, yes I was thinking about the stability issue. I would probably have to build a special stand for the entire 8 ft of cage.Thats alot of cage.Id rather go for a 6ft but the price of the t10s are cheaper then two smaller cages. My female is still very small so I got time.

The larger plastic cages are, the more they tend to sag a little with the weight of occupants & water bowls & such...so a solid stand is a must. But as you say, you have time...I think it's a good plan.

Get the taller cage. You'll thank us later. The T8 is too short and hard to reach into the back corners even at shoulder level.

That's for sure! The plastic cages I tried were about 12" high, & reaching to the back corners to clean was super-annoying...& I was always scraping my arm on the door opening. Ugh!

Hey Miranda I did exactly what you are suggesting with PVC cages. Before I assembled them I clamped the two side panels together and traced the cutout about 1 1/2 inches in from the edges. I used a square Tupperware lid to trace rounded out corners... Drilled a hole in the center to start the cut and cut both pieces at the same time with a jigsaw and a metal bit. After the cut, I drilled four holes in each corner to later be used to bolt the cages together... Filed and sanded it all down... Built the cages and bolted them together. BAM! Eight foot cage. Piece of cake.

@Kung Fu Joe And it was a fraction of the cost of a normal 8' cage.

Thanks KFJ, I will have to remember how you did that. Although I dont really want the lip on the bottom it does look more secure.
I did just order the first T10 today. It has a 10-12 week ship date so will be quite awhile before I see it. The first one will be for my male, it will be his permanent cage. Then I may get another in Feb for my little girl. I dont know when I will get the third one, probably late next year after We pay of the dental bills.

You will probably want the lip at the bottom to minimise spilling drips. I'd make it at the very least a quarter inch high as then it would have to have a quarter inch of standing water before it becomes a dripping issue.

yes your probably right about the lip. I would silicon/caulk it though..I may just end up buying a large cage in the end because I have at least a year to think about it.
My girl is only 200 grams right now. But she has the best temperament ever, very mellow. The male is a bit hissy but handleable.

I would recommend drop doors with a bottom lip for any enclosure, as that lip really helps to keep stuff in the enclosure where it belongs. Also, while the sliding doors make access easy, dirt and grime tends to accumulate in the bottom track and it's a PITA to clean out. My T8's also have the bottom lip in front of the track with a small gap between them, and my snakes like to jam their faces in there -especially when they smell feeders thawing - so they end up smooshing their noses and jaws.

Q-tip dipped in water works pretty well.

I actually ordered the sliding acrylic doors. I dont think they sell drop down doors but they do have the side opening option..I probably could change the order, but I read the side opening doors warp over time.

The sliding doors are fine. It is just a preference thing. The tracks do get dirty so a Q-tip is a good way to clean it. Snakes do like to sit in the tracks at times.
