Default Local vs Locale. Spelling police

I saw Chris' (@dangles ) little tagline where he says "I judge your grammar" and it made me remember one of the spelling errors that bother me. When people use the word "local" instead of "locale". I have no idea why that drives me up a wall, but it does. So, like Chris... I judge. Sorry

In my attempt to judge less frequently, I thought I'd offer up some info for anyone interested. The following excerpts were taken from M-W.com:

      locale

      lo·cale

      noun \lō-ˈkal\
      Definition of LOCALE

1: a place or locality especially when viewed in relation to a particular event or characteristic

      2: site, scene <the locale of a story>

      and by contrast we have:

      local

      2local

      noun
      Definition of LOCAL

: a local person or thing: as a : a local public conveyance (as a train or an elevator) b : a local or particular branch, lodge, or chapter of an organization (as a labor union)

Hopefully there will be no more confusing of "local" for the proper "locale" when discussing locality boas

Ok, I'm turning the siren off in the spelling police cruiser!

First of all this is a huge trigger for me, it drives me nuts when people say " I got a Local"

That means that they got a Boa from the Neighborhood Walgreens or something

If they purchased a Locale Boa then then they purchased a Boa from
a special geographical place in a certain country.

      @Jonathan Brady

Jb for the tags you should be able to just hit the button that says "Tag Users" a
Line will app[ear then enter user names on that line

Glad I'm not the only one! lol

I was referring to tagging within the body of a message. Like for instance, in the original post I wrote: I saw Chris'... and right there, I wanted to put @dangles but it just wouldn't work.

      jb

EDIT* Figured it out I was making it WAY more complicated than it's supposed to be. Go figure.

      lol

What really bugs me is when I see that in a classified ad. It's as bad as the guys selling "Columbian" boas.

uhhh... ColUmbians... UHHHH! That drives me nuts too!

If people could hear someone from Colombia, South America actually SAY the word Colombia, I don't think they'd ever spell it wrong again. The enunciation makes the spelling so obvious!

I agree too!! That makes three!

The usage of local also drives me insane. Like text-speak on a forum or in an email does. Grrrrrrr..

@Jonathan Brady i'm glad i'm not the only one! lol!

(p.s. speaking of grammar/punctuation usage..... the only time you DON'T put the "s" after the apostrophe is in the plural possessive form. i.e. "apparently all of jb's teachers' punctuation skills were lacking." )

Some of this stuff drives me nuts also. Mostly its the spelling errors that get to me - I ignore errors in grammar and punctuation all the time. I do this mainly because I think some of our rules of grammar and punctuation make written communication sound too stilted and formal. I want what I write to sound more like how I would actually talk - except with all the circular rambling and the stumbling over the chaos in my head removed.

By the way, there are only a handful of "us" who give a crap about this kind of thing, and about a zillion of "them" who really. really. don't. Threads like this make us look like whiny little girls. Remember that little nerd on the basketball court who tried to call every foul? Do you remember him getting praised for protecting the rules of the game, or do you remember him getting put in a trash can? I'm just saying.

Why do you think he's been lifting weights so emphatically?

As for me, I hated high school. The jocks and I didn't get along. Come to think of it, the ______ and I didn't get along (fill in the blank with whatever group you want, lol).

Don't let Chris fool you; he doesn't get to be in the Nerd club. He ran track in High School. The secret's out Chris. Now you have to mail your Nerd I.D. to the DMV.

YouTube - "Weird Al" Yankovic - White & Nerdy

I prefer Picard. Kirk is too 60's-ish "I'm a Space Pirate and I'll beat you up!" for me now-a-days.

Had to man... it was the only way to stay alive before I figured out how to blend in and/or be funny. If there were enough outcasts around the cool kids were afraid they would get sucked into our group and not be allowed to wear their jerseys and cheerleader outfits on game day anymore.
