Default Question about heat source for you experts.

I was wondering if a Boa needs a heat lamp as a heat source or if I can use UTH source instead?

I think it depends on the size of your tank. If it's a short tank, a UTH would be enough, but if it's a tall tank, you'll probably need an additional heat source. My tank is 30 inches tall so I use both a UTH and a CHE, both on separate thermostats.

Ditto on what's been said, UTH is usually enough for Boas.

it also depends on the ambiant temps in the room you keep your cages in

My cages are 4'x18"x18" and I use belly heat in them. but I also keep my place a little cooler than they would like (just under 70) so I also have CHEs to keep the ari temp in the cages up to 80-85

I need say nothing here all has been said. If you are having temp problems trying insulating tanks with styrofoam sounds stupid but it works!!!!

if ya dont want to or cant use other heat sources what you could do is have the entire cage bottom lined with uths or the majority of it...one on the cool side and another for a hot spot....both set on its own t-stat naturally...i have double heat installed in one of my boaphile which i use for ambiants and i plan on putting another one on the other side for a basking spot

I've had to do this in a rubbermaid set-up when the cool side was too cool but the hot side would get to hot if I kicked it up a notch. It was a simple as adding a human heating pad under both sides and a 40 w red light on the hot side and a dimmer on the cool side only which kept the temps where they needed to be throughout the whole enclosure. I tried to just move the heating pad over to the center of the enclosure but that just made one hot spot in the center and too cool sides on each side. Didn't quite work out that way.

uths dont really do anything for ambiants....thats why you would need to put 2 of them in...i was thinking of just switching all my tanks heat out and line the the bottoms with 2 peices of flexwatt....and have 2 t-stats controlling hot and cool spots...
