Hi everyone, I have just bought a 7 month old boa from a guy and discovered it has mites. I have been reading the threads and would like to know where to get prevent-a-mite? Is it avialable at pet stores or from a vet?

You will have to get it online. TheBeanfarm.com has it.

I prefer to use nix lice shampoo dilluted with 1 gallon of distilled water then spray everything down including the snake enclosure all cage furniture and substrate. I also recomend using paper towels as substrate until the mites are gone.

Yep, I did this, works wonders. I also (just to be safe) sprayed the p.a.m. in the cage, excluding water bowl, of course. Have had no reoccurance.

Nix is a great alternative as the others have stated.
I personally like to use Equate from Walmart or Meijer Generic Meijer Lice bedding spray.
These are all Lice bedding treatment sprays.
They contain the same active ingredients as P-A-M at a quater of the cost.
I'll leave a few more Links to other posts you may have missed on this subject:
I Hate Mites!!!!
My post with in that thread:
The mites around the eyes can be very tough to deal with. I know what I've done in the past.
Its very delicate pretty much like a surgical procedure.
Using a tooth pick I gently work the tip of the tooth pick around the eye.
I really wouldn't suggests trying this unless you completely understand Boa anatomy etc...
The soaking and Permethrin should do the trick.
Here is a few other helpful link posts if you haven't already found them
Re: mites
Myzoo says Exactly what I would recommend . Any product that has 0.50% Permethrin .
Equate is the brand that's at my local Walmart,LOL.
It has the proper ingredients of 0.50% Permethrin.
I'll leave a few links to my search results for threads about Mites and controling/killing them.

In 2004 I had a mite problem in part of my
collection that became rediculous.I read the
info provided by VPI great info.It wasn't until I used a
product containing 0.50% Permethrin that I
destroyed the Mites completely.

Hey I have a question has anyone heard of or used Ivermectin ?
Cow & Pig Ivermectin you mix 1cc per 1 quart of water.
these are the directions I recieved from vet as a less
toxic alternative to Permethrin spray.
The Ivermectin water mix can be sprayed on both
Snake & bedding .

I know Ivermectin is for internal parasites like heart worm
with dogs .
There are many ways to administer this medication.
I'm very curious if anyone else has heard of this
Ivermectin mite treatment I described?

I use it . I inject it under the skin or give it orally. I use it on my dogs and everything. It is a very good wormer and external parasite remover. I've never used it like you mentioned though. You need to use a 1cc syringe to us it the way I do. 1 cc treats 100 lbs. I use the cattle one. The pig one is 75 lbs.. A 1cc syringe breaks it down into 10 th of a pound and less. Diabetic needs work good when giving to small reptiles. BE FOR WARNED WEAK ANIMALS WILL DIE WHEN YOU USE IVOMEC. SO SEVERELY WORMY REPTILES YOU NEED TO GIVE IT HALF STRENGTH OR LESS AND GRADUALLY GO UP. I will be happy to answer any questions. Pertaining to how I use the product. I give it a thumbs up though.

Thanks Wes yes I'm semi familiar with using it how you described.
I'm just curious if anyone has used it or heard of using as the spray on solution as I mentioned 1cc mixed to 1 quart of water.
I'm told the toxic affect is almost null on the animals .Yet very toxic to external parasites, knocks out many
external type parasites a wide range I'm told.

I have tried that but it's works better the other way. I have also mixed a solution up and soaked the snakes in it too. It kills lice, Mites , fleas and tics. I know that for sure. It also kills all worms with a nervous system. Flat worms it will not kill cause most have no nervous system. I myself would still use something to treat the cage with besides it. I've used all kinds of bug killer on my cages. If it is safe for home use. You just have to make sure it is dry before returning the reptile.

I made this statement earlier. I would like to change it some. LOL Lar got me to thinking. A couple of my Burms have Mites.I've been using certain things. But nothing seems to work completely. Soon as you think they're gone for good they come back.
So I went and mixed up the Ivomec like Lar said. I've tried it before but never really paid attention to the results. I've got 1 female burm that has them bad. So I sprayed her down with the mixture. There was a 100% knock down of mites on her body. With the other stuff. Mites were still crawling on her. After 15 minutes of spraying and showed no I'll effects. The Ivomec spray was almost an instant kill. Within 5 minutes not even a twitch out of them.
So Lar I really think your on to something here. That was a very useful post and I hope all who visit this site read it. There needs to be a thread just on this and sticky it. I am honestly surprised at how well it worked. I will keep everyone posted on how everything goes. Thanks again for bringing that up. It made me do some thinking. Good looking out on that one.:thumb s_up

Thanks guys! I have liquid Ivomec that I bought for my dogs but lost the dosage amount so I haven't used it yet. I haven't had a mite problem (yet) and hopefully never will but it's nice to know that I have something on hand if they ever rear their ugly heads. Good idea for a sticky!

(Canine dosage for heartworms would be greatly appreciated...)
