very helpful, i recently purchased 2 boas, and feeding them live pinkies right now. very soon i will work on converting them to fresh-killed or thawed prey. my boas are right around 2 1/2' long. how much should they be eating?? 2 pinkies is my plan for this weekend.

The care guide has a very good age+length chart in the feeding section that tells you what it should be eating.

You can find it here:

With pinks, there isn't much danger to your snake. Once those little buggers grow teeth, different story.

As to the question on how much to feed, the girth, not length of your snake is the guide. You should feed one prey item that is approx equal to the girth of the largest part of your boa. There should be a barely noticable lump in your snake when your done.

Using this as a guide, I'm willing to bet that pinks are too small. You might need to be on weanlings, also called pups, or even small adults by now.

Good luck on your conversion to f/t. It sometimes takes patience, but you'll do fine!

EDIT: Thanx for posting this again Clay. Alway good to see it again!

Well that statement is something or other.
First heaven forbid we try and put some effort into keeping boas, screw that
the boa can die but hey it's easier.
Second due you have proof that it is healthier live vs fresh kill, and how is it
healthy getting bit in the.....
Third how about feeding one appropriate sized meal instead of 3 times a feeding
chance of getting bit. And if you are worried about healthier mice do not
have near the nutrition rate as a rat.

Yours got bit and is still fed live was it you that got bit in the head?

How is it healthier? A FT rat has the same nutritional value as a live one. Was it healthy for your snake to get bit on the head instead of eating a dead rat? Also if its too much effort to put a rat in a ziplock and put it in a bowl of water, you shouldn't own snakes. Just my .02
