My definition of power feeding/over feeding is all of the above. But I know a few other people who would think other wise. I would also like to here from any one who has over feed or power feed for what ever reason being and what were the after affects from doing so? I though this would be a good topic to bring up being that we got a few new members here and I would love to here what they have to say about the subject.

I'm a new owner of a 3 month, 24", female BCI. This is my first time for a boa and first time to feed a f/t item. I was told it would be time for her to switch to an adult mouse. So, I bought the adult mouse from a chain store, one of those gourmet rodents, thawed it for an hour, then in the bag, set it in a disposable container of hot (100-110) water for about 15 mins. I then cut open the bag and placed the mouse the feeding cage. I washed my hands and went back and got my new girl.

It wasn't until I placed her in the feeding cage with the mouse, that I realized it was about 20-30% wider than her! She immediately went for it though, and after circling it three times grabbed the head and swallowed it, all together in about 20 mins. I let her sit for a few mins and stretch her jaws. Then, I gently picked her up by the mid section, cupped her and carefully let her back into her cage and crawl into the hide-spot she's designated home ( she has three).

That was last night. I bumped the ambient temp up from 80-83 to 86-88, thinking that might help digestion.

1) I am not familiar with Boas or f/t food items.

2) My first snake was a Corn which I fed too large a prey item as a baby and it regurgitated then never ate properly again. I've since had a royal python who I unfortunately have been unsuccessful converting to f/t, but I purchased as a adolescent snake and have always been able to caution on the side of smaller food items.

Until she's larger, I will buy the packs of ten mice I can get from a local shop where I can see the mouse size and go smaller. But, for now what can I do to make this meal easiest on my girl and avoid health issues??

Hey guys, new to the forum but I have a problem. I have read this particular section in hopes to solve my problem but I haven't had any luck.

I got Ruby at a reptile show on August 19th and was told she was feeding on f/t small hoppers and had shed the week previously so all sounded good.

I weighed her on August 20th and she was 70g. I've attempted to feed her several times with no luck. These are all things I've tried:

*f/t hopper, dangled, drug, and wiggled in front of her. No response.
*f/t pinkie, dangled, drug, and wiggled... no respond.
*f/t hopper, head skin peeled back... no response.
*f/t hopper, gut cut open... no response.
*f/t pinkie, head cut and gut cut open ... no response.
*I've left both in the enclosure overnight, nothing.
*I've tried feeding in the enclosure (which I'm not a fan of), on a towel, and in the bathtub. Nothing.

I've waited 5 days now... not handling her or anything, hoping she'd get hungry. I weighed her this morning and she's down to 64g. I've got her in a tub with a lid (and holes) in her enclosure now with a f/t hopper. The room is completely dark and she's been in there about 90 minutes with no interest shown to the prey.

Her temps are around 90 on the hot end and 75 on the cool end, water on both ends and humidity around 65-75% constantly. The enclosure is in a very low traffic area.

I don't want to go live and I cannot kill a mouse. I know, I know. I should really get over that... but I've worked with and owned snakes since 2004 and I cannot get over killing one. I just can't.

So what am I doing wrong or what is my next step? I'm sort of at a loss and getting worried. She seems "happy" and is very sweet when handled.

Thanks guys for any help.

My Peruvian is usually a very docile girl...and today when I tried to feed her (her usual sized rat) she began to hiss aggressively and it seems she is very stressed out. I'm just wondering if this is something that's fairly common or if there is a cause for concern. Perhaps a health issue that is making her want me to stay away from her?

I also just moved her into a bigger container if this information helps any. She also shed her skin recently. However, her shedding has never effected her feeding in any way. I've had her for a year and a half. She's never done this while upgrading her either and it's definitely not typical behavior for my girl. I'm concerned, so any help would be awesome. Thank you!

My Alice will be 2 years old about Nov/Dec. She is around 4ft 5in... She eats a small rat every two weeks. Is that alright, or should I make the move and bump her up to medium rat? I was going to wait until she was nearly 2 to bump up her food size but now I am debating if I should have already done it by now...

Not sure if this means anything but she sheds once a month now (sometimes two). I believe 2in in length increase each month if I had to guess.

Hello RTB! I'm so new I still squeak out of the plastic.

I'm dsimpson's girlfriend, currently he is deployed overseas in Afghanistan and I am looking after his Hog Island boa. She's about two years old or so, and lived at least a year of that at a pet store which is why we picked her up. I'm not an expert at snake husbandry but I have been with my boyfriend for about 3 years now, he has kept snakes for two and a half of those years and I have helped, so I am not a newbie either.

Generally she has a wonderful temperament, very relaxed and not easily startled. However about a month and a half ago, she started to act very ornery. I took this as over-socialization and moved her to a less traffic location. Then she stopped eating, started biting me and started getting a lump by her butt (technical term, I know) so I brought her to a reptile expert friend of mine who got some urite blockage out of her and suggested more moisture, as my house is dry compared to dsimpson's. She seemed happy and healthy enough, and even started to go into shed. (She is currently due to shed any day now)

On Monday, about a month after I took her to the expert and I suppose three days after her blue eyes cleared up but has not shed yet, I went in to change her water bowl and the usual hissing was not there. She just kept following my hand. I figured she was hungry, so I warmed up a rat pup and gave it to her... she practically lept out of the enclosure at me! I figured all was well until today. I got home from work and there was a regurgitated rat in her enclosure.

Told dsimpson about this, he suggested removing ALL of her substrate/climbing vines etc and leaving only the hide and water dish, which I have done and I scrubbed the tank with hot water. She is currently sitting in a covered box, as any attempt to move her results in striking and shaking from her, so I'm leaving her for a bit before I put her back. She is living in an enclosure which is way too small for her, but we have new boaphile ones on the way which SHOULD be here by Friday.

Any idea what's going on with her? She used to be such an easy snake, a good eater and never aggressive. Any and all help would be appreciated; as dsimpson does not return from deployment on Leave until September and I would hate for something drastic to happen between now and then. Thank you for your help in advance!

i am new to owning a boa. i have a baby (18") hypo pastel red tail.....i have had it for 5 days and it seems to like its new surroundings, and we are getting along great...but last night i tried feeding it a thawed pinky mouse, and it wasnt interested, then tonight i tried one that i popped open the skull and stomach for the smell, again not interested...im going to leave this one in all night.....but i read somewhere that a baby boa wont eat until it sheds for the first time, dont know if it has yet or not....how old does it have to be to shed the first time? and thought it might be because of the new surroundings, might need a little more time....any suggestions? thanks very much
