I will 100% agree that it is owner negilgence that led to the damage in the pics. I would also argue that the problem is with feeding live. I would argue, and get plenty of opposistion here and elswhere, that feeding live is a negligent behavior unless you have a snake that will only feed on live prey. Even then, there are things one can do to alter snake behavior. I would say that with the ability to get frozen feeders online for less that the cost of going to the pet store, econimically f/t makes more sense. Those who raise their own rats can pre-kill them. There is just almst no reason I can think of, save what I already mentioned above to feed live. The argument that "Nobody kills their prey in the wild." doesn't hold water. These are not "wild" animals. They are captive kept, and most often, captive bred. A lot of people take the absurd stance that "It just won't eat dead prey." My own mother did that to me for 2 years AFTER she had to spend 2k on a rat injury. 4 mos. ago, her ball python ate one of the frozen feeders that I bought for Pandora. No problem. She has eated f/t every meal after that....

the video joley found of the lizard eating a live rat proves why you still shouldnt feed live... whether you're watching or not... thats just horrible... when i get my petshop i'm going to post those pictures in there for educational purposes...

Re: Results of Feeding LIVE!!! VERY GRAPHIC!!!
That just breaks my heart. I convinced my to feed f/t to his boa. It was really hard because he was one that believed that we took so much away from these creatures already that they should be able to eat the way they were designed to eat. I am so glad that he feeds f/t. It's really funny to watch a snake try to kill a dead mouse.

Re: Results of Feeding LIVE!!! VERY GRAPHIC!!!
Well Ernest, just so you know, I used to feed live and I would sit there with a plastic fork, shoving the fork down the rats mouth so it couldn't bite my snake. I eventually got so paranoid and hated doing this, I switched to f/t. I think this was really good for people who feed live to see. This is what happens when you leave a live rat unattended with a snake whose is not hungry. Many people who feed live, feed responsibily (like I did) but, this is what could happen. Thanks for sharing Ernest!

lol, i acted that way the first time me and my room mate fed donut and nofeet. but donut has been on p/k for a longggg time after witnessing a rat "try" to bite him. and he just ate his first f/t last week. i couldnt imagine tossing in a medium rat alive with him now. just too nerve racking for me.
awww come on!!! i try to tag it and it still pops up with the video :'( i WILL find a way around this!

Re: Results of Feeding LIVE!!! VERY GRAPHIC!!!
Our pets are all captive born and its necessary for us to take the responsibility of taking care of them in all ways possible ( I mean come on they didn't asked to be removed from the wild for our enjoyment). Protecting them through feeding frozen thawed is necessary for proper care. Because of that snake's owner's negligence it now has to live in pain and have horrible damage done to it. We humans were once "wild" but none of us could survive the conditions we were once acustomed to. Our snakes were once wild but its irrational to think they can live in those same conditions .
No argument can be made that feeding live is better. Find one picture for me of a frozen feeder eating a snake and hey I might buy into feeding live. Until then its not worth the risk. Econimically frozen feeders are cheaper even with shipping. There isn't the risk of a frozen feeder eating your pet. The risk of parasites is greatly reduced. Any snake enthusiast, no matter what the circumstances are, should be feeding f/t because no matter how you look at it, they are better. Those pics are frustrating and just shows the neglegence of people who feed live.

Dude, it was pretty easy for me. Look at the section on feeding f/t in the Ultimate Care Guide. Particularly, the part on how to thaw the feeders. That's what I based my method on. I use tongs and make the rat dance. So far, Pandora will not just slither up and start feeding. She still has to kill it, guard it, and then , finally eat it. This is also the method I used to get my nephew's (mom's) ball python to eat f/t.
