If is my belief that it takes a period of time with a male courting and stimulating the female in order to cause her to develop the egg follicles. Once the development of egg folicles has occured, it then takes actual copulation from the male to fertilize the ova, in order for the female to actually ovulate and then become gravid.

Ovulation is strictly the development of ova and moving them through the oviducts. This ovulation very closely resembles the swelling associated with being gravid, but is in fact a precursor to fertilization and becoming gravid
