  • Pastels?

    Hello!
I have a pastel/red tail. It dosen't look like a pastel it just looks like a regular red tail. If I were to breed him would I end up with any Pastels?
    Thanks.

    Re: Pastels?

No. pastels are not a morph. they were produced (thank you Jeff Ronne ;D ) by selectivly breeding Boas that have certain genetic traits, like lighter colors. So you wont get any hets. do you have any pics of your pastel? where did you get her? -Juggalo

      Re: Pastels?

Pastel is a co-dominate trait. What this means in a nutshell is that IF you have a pastel "bloodline" boa and you breed it, you will have pastel babies in that offspring. This is known as first generation.

There are a lot of boas that definately have the pastel attributes, reduced black, high pink/orange highlights, and extremely reduced dorsal saddles (which will appear washed out and almost transparent), and reduced side patterns or medallions. Many boas that carry these traits can breed and not pass on these trait to the offspring.

However what makes a true Pastel "BLOODLINE" is that the offspring will contain guaranteed pastel boas.

Breeding a pastel to a pastel will produce ALL pastel babies.
Breeding a pastel to a normal will produce 1/2 pastel babies.

So if you took one of the normal looking babies from breeding a pastel to a normal. What would you get just normal babies? And shouldn't pastel's be considered a morph?

            Chris,

That is one amazing looking animal! May I ask where you purchased it? I'm sure I could never afford one but if an unexpected wind fall should come my way I'd love to know.

            Thanks,
            Meryl
