• Baby's have arrived but I'm confused

image.jpgimage.jpgHello fellow herp lovers,
My pastel just gave birth on 3/31 to 17 nice looking boas however I'm confused because the sir is albino and she is a nice pastel yet I was shocked to see that there is not a single albino. I adopted both of them about a year ago from the east bay vivarium in Berkeley ,California so the information they had was limited they did say she is a hypo pastel. I will try and post both the female and male and the babies. Baby pics might be a bit blurred because I'm currently 700 miles from home and my 16 year old has taken great care of everything so far she's a great snake mom lol. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated Thank you for reading this. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Albino is a recessive gene. Both parents need to carry at least one copy to produce visual albino offspring. You can get visual albinos from breeding together:
• Albino to albino
• Albino to het albino
• Het albino to het albino
Your babies are all het albino, since they will have received one copy of the albino gene from the albino sire.

This is a big of a read, but might get you started in the right direction: http://www.redtailboas.com/f115/no-f...s-guide-53782/

Oh got it thank you for the info and guide ... By chance would the offspring then also be het for pastel or something along those lines? I can't wait to see them in person (many weeks from that thou) and will post better pictures in the future.

Where in NoCal?

Looks like a pretty nice litter!

.
Pastel is essentially a normal with a reduction of black speckling -- it is not a morph (no hets)
.
Congrats on the litter. You have a brave 16 yr old -- many female Boas have real nasty attitudes after giving birth.

I am going to be the jerk I guess! Why in the world are you breeding boas? This breeding is the very basics of genetics with these snakes and you seem to have little knowledge regarding the topic. I can only gauge by what is in your post, and maybe you have more info to offer and I am missing it completely. In general, it drives me crazy when people get into the hobby, have a male and a female of something and think that they must breed them. You stated yourself that you have very little info on these snakes from the place where you got them, so why breed them? They could be het for other things that you are not aware of and then those get passed along unnoticed and then on down the line they pop up, it can just get messy, not to mention, it makes the babies harder to sell honestly. Sorry if Im coming off as harsh, but it really drives me crazy, please, please , please put a ton of thought into it before breeding and educate yourself as much as possible. Breeding any animal is not something to jump into, look at dogs and cats, snakes are no different and will be just as overbred and the purebreds/high quality animals will be easier to move(sell) and the mixed breeds and unknowns will sit around.

Why would you feel the need? You could simply help by passing on the information instead of trying to tear someone down. There are plenty of ways to say what you want to say without being, to use your own words, a jerk.

I think your concerns were appropriately addressed by @natieb. That being said, AaronZav, that was a wee bit harsh. I totally understand what you are saying but that is like closing the barn door after the horse is out and is bordering on FB rudeness which is not welcomed on this forum.

Harsh, yes... but sometimes harsh gets the point across where polite doesn't. FB rude? Not even close. Unfortunately I didn't save my initial response to someone who posted on FB that the female he'd gotten from a rescue just a few days prior was ovulating, and did anyone have a male he could borrow immediately to make babies??? Oh yeah, that was way past FB rude - and I actually never sent it - I had to rewrite it quite a few times actually to get all of the rude out.

To the OP, reputable breeders pair males and females either with an eye toward producing a particular morph / combo, or even to improve the line of morph they're working with. They also have a good idea what genes are in the snakes they are working with, as some combos are incompatible or even fatal; you need to do a lot of research on genetics before buying an appropriate male for your females, never mind pairing them.

So, your litter will contain normal het albino and pastel het albino babies. You're facing two major challenges when marketing these critters, assuming you don't plan to keep all 17. First, you don't know what line of albino you have (kahl or sharp), and the two lines are not compatible; pair a kahl albino to a sharp albino and the litter has no visual albinos, the babies are all het kahl het sharp. So right there you've excluded buyers looking for a specific line of albino to breed, they'll go to a breeder who can guarantee genetics rather than take a chance on yours. Second, less than reputable sellers in the past have pawned off normals as "false hets", and given that you asked such a basic question about genetics I'll assume that you're new to snakes and snake breeding. Buyers are justifiably wary of unknown sellers with hets, as they can't be proven out for a few years, only at that time will the buyer discover that he or she was scammed, and by then the seller is long gone.

@Aaron I fill your pain and you sounding like a jerk is not a problem. Let me give you a bit of history about myself. I use to breed boas of various kind over 13 years ago and at one point had over 5 breeding pairs ( I know that's not much by today's standard but then again I not looking into becoming a puppy farmer ) back then if you had a said albino well sir you had something not many had. Your are correct that people should do a ton of reserch before dealing with or for that matter owning these wonderful animals. My daughter who is enrolled in a junior zoologist program and hopping to get into herpetology as a major at some point got me back into this world we all love and enjoy. Yes sir you are correct I do have very limited history of said boas because of I chose to take in 2 snakes no one longer wanted. I started to read up on hex/het X O A and B ... And was just asking for a bit of inside info not many share. Anything else ya want to know Aaron by chance?
