  • Hog Island Boa Female (Lorelei)

She came in today from Native Spirit Reptiles (nsreptiles.com) she appears to be healthy and seems to have that Hog attitude

The pics are not very good, taken on the old Mavica at work and didnt have much for a setup.

    Here she is:

I exaggerated a little with the attitude, she does not seem to be to bad... a tiny bit hissy and pulls back into the "S" when I reached into the rubbermaid tube I have her in. It's hard to get a true judge of personality this soon after coming in via ups in a snake bag Hopefully her 'tude does not get worse once she settles in. (crosses fingers)

      She is about 3.5' long.

Wow, she looks a lot bigger than 3 1/2 feet. Maybe it's the girth that makes her look bigger. Or maybe I am just a dork and that tub is smaller than I think. Hehehehhe She's prolly just stressed from her "ride". I know I would be if I was stuck in a back & cramed into a UPS box. God knows those UPS guys don't handle those boxes well. (no offense to anyone who is a UPS guy or gal) LOL She is a really pretty snake. Do they get as big as redtails?

              Re:Hog Island Boa Female (Lorelei)

              Thanks for the compliments!
Hogs are one of my favorites! They are really cool snakes.
They stay smaller than their colombian cousins. A female hog will typically max out around the 7' mark, males of course will be smaller. They also tend to change colors with mood, temps, and time of day... going from a dark speckled khaki color like in the above pics, to a light putty grey color with almost no speckling, and then over to a light brown with brilliant orange and coral colors. One thing I have noticed, and it may just be me, is that the Hog Island Boas tend to be more attentive than other BCI's. When my hand goes into my males cage he tracks every little movement as does this female. They also seem to be more active and spend more time climbing as well.

The "folding" behind her head is because she was about to shed. When she first arrived I thought she had patches of retained sheds but once she got into her new cage she started to drop her old skin. When I checked on her this morning I had a few pieces of shed and nice big present too.

Here are a couple of pics of my male to show how much color changing they can do. The pics are not the greatest but the do a pretty good job of representing the color changes.
              Light.....

              Colorful....

                Hi stormyva,

Nice looking Hogg you've got there. We have been wanting to get a pair soon too. Just love the way they change colors, like getting 4 snakes for the price of one! b14.gif

Probably a few years down the road I am going to put them together and see what happens. She is only about a year old and around 4' so she has some growing to do before she is ready for a "serious relationship".
