It's -24 right now. That's 24 below zero! That's right. As of 8:00 AM January 2, 2010, it is 24 degrees below zero. That's 31 below zero Celsius for you Canadians.
Now many of you have absolutely no concept how cold 24 below really is. Most freezers run at zero degrees. If you go outside in weather like this, the surface of your skin will begin to freeze in minutes. Not all skin is created equally for sure. People of Norwegian decent, like me, have a much greater tolerance for the cold than people that come from areas around the equator. Yesterday I had to check on the neighbors horses for them. I was out for about 20 minutes in 3 or 4 degrees with a coat on but I still had on my shorts. Me and my legs were just fine.
For perspective some of you should consider this. You know how many of you begin to cry when the temperatures in your area dip way down into the 30s? You know who you people are too don't you? Let's assume it drops down to 30 degrees OK? It is 54 degrees colder than that here right now. Think about the difference between how 30 degrees feels compared to 84 degrees. That is how much COLDER it is here in Minnesota right now. Think about that when you are experiencing those temperatures dipping way down into the 30s that make you feel like you are going to die.
I took the pictures below yesterday on the first of the year. These guys would actually not like the temperatures outside at all either.
