What Camera do you use?

I am in the market for a nice camera. I was lucky enough to have my brother let me use his Nikon which was great but I can't afford that one.

I want one for myself so I can snap good pictures whenever I want.


Post up here what camera you use along with pros & cons. I was really thinking of an under water camera and get some crazy pictures from underwater while they swim.

IMO you want a general purpose digital camera that will fit in your pocket. I'd look for one with a wide-angle to medium-telephoto zoom lens and macro capability. Canon, Nikon, Olympus are good brands, though there are others. I'm using a Canon, but models change so often that mine has probably been superseded. Plan how much you can spend, but figure $150 as rock bottom.

I vote against underwater capability unless you are really into scuba. Or a waterproof housing could be added to the outfit later.

I like to check out the cameras at Best Buy or someplace similar to see how the controls fit my hands. There is nothing so irritating as using a camera with inconvenient controls.

The underwater camera would be separate from the normal good camera.

Do people generally use more of an SLR or a Digital?

Both, as you can get a digital SLR. My DSLR is a Cannon EOS Rebel. I forget which model now as I've had it for a few years and it's not right in front of me. It ran me about $600 though. It's a great starter camera.

Get a DSLR, or even a mirrorless. You want to be able to change lenses for different situations. A pocket camera is just a point and shoot for "snapshots." If you want to get serious about your pics, DSLR.

For highest quality, a DSLR, no argument. But the OP seems to be on a budget. And the more a camera outfit weighs, the less likely it is to be carried. A name-brand pocket camera that can do 5 mega-pixels or more gets surprisingly good quality shots nowadays.
