  • Baby Boas... Finally!! (UPDATED)

    Good news, everyone!

I finally had a litter of boas, and they're pretty good ones. Story time. So back in 2010 I picked up an amazing hypo jungle 50% poss het Kahl albino from a local breeder. I picked him out at the reptile show before he had his first shed, made some payments and named him Link. Here's that thread. Some time later, I got a 2008 albino jungle female, Tifa. The perfect mate, right? So I put them together for the 11/12 breeding season, and nothing really happened. I chalked it up to them being young and inexperienced, and tried again the next year. He showed a little more interest this time around, but she never showed an ovulation or any signs of being gravid, and eventually slugged out way later. I was bummed, but it happens. So I gave her a year off, and put the lovely couple back together around December '14. Link was all over her, but again she didn't have an obvious ovulation or POS, never went off food, or showed any signs of being gravid. I think they were separated in March, and I'd given up again.

So fast forward to August. I'm trying to sell my house and everything's been hectic, and I've had to cover over the snakes because of all the showings. So I uncovered the Boaphile stack to do some cleaning and BAM there's a pile of wigglers staring back at me. Enough of my rambling, here are some pictures:

Tifa, 2008 female Kahl albino jungle. I don't have a lot of pictures of her, sue me:

Here's Link, the 2010 hypo jungle definitely not het albino. I have a million pictures of him:

    Here are some babies:

I haven't sexed them yet, but I think the breakdown is like:

    3 poss jungles
    3 jungles
    1 hypo
    2 hypo jungles
    3 hypo super jungles

I will update with individual pics when I get some time. Thanks for looking!

Link may not be het Albino, but those nice looking babies sure are . I'm intrigued how some Jungles are so nicely zig-zagged, and some are missing saddles - that seems to bee a more recent Jungle characteristic . To have both types in the same litter is awesome . I'd love to have a litter like that . Save me a nice male, or a possible trade option.

I know that you are the master of understatement but PLEASE tell me you at least cracked a smile when you saw them? Dang, I have wanted a Link baby for a while and you have quite a few stunners in there. Congratulations on the first litter! Way to go for a first one too!

Nothing like a phone call from Jess while they are cleaning saying, "Can you come down. We have a situation here." Awesome litter though.

Interestingly, neither of them are all that far removed from Pete Kahl, so it's not like I have some crazy outcrossed blood. I don't know if I'd call Tifa "low expression", but she has the straight, uniform jungle saddles and obvious amounts of creamy jungle coloration. Link's pattern speaks for itself, but I thought it was interesting there was one full chainlink baby like him, but not more like I'd expected. Jungle is far and away my favorite morph though, and it's awesome to see a little bit of every type of pattern in there. I'm not pricing anything or putting them up for sale until they get a few meals in them, but if you see something you might be interested in, shoot me a PM and I'll make a note.

Are you kidding? I've been positively giddy since I first saw them.

I'm about to post some individual pics, stay tuned!

                        Re: Baby Boas... Finally!!

Alright, here we go. These are just open-the-tub-and-snap-a-shot pictures with no consideration for lighting or composition. If the resolution makes them hard to see, let me know and I can resize them. It's not my fault my camera is way too good.

First up is a hypo Super Jungle, aka boa constrictor perfection. Don't even ask, this one is NOT FOR SALE

Another hypo Super Jungle. This one has has amazing color, a reverse stripe to die for, and really stands out from the crowd in the whole litter shots. I'm not sure yet how I'll go about selling SJs. They're sort of a crap shoot when it comes to health, they can live as long as any other boa or drop dead for no reason. And there's almost zero chance of successfully breeding them, so you'd have to really want to just have a really cool display snake with an uncertain lifespan. That's why I set out to produce them. I've always wanted one, but couldn't justify spending money on them. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on the matter.

I think this one is also a hypo SJ. I'll give it closer inspection and revise it in the future, but it has no pattern on its sides and overall just has all of the jungle traits turned up to 11.

Another hypo with hardcore jungle characteristics. This one's going to be stupidly colorful.

Another beauty of a hypo jungle. I would still call this a "high expression" jungle. I think some people think that it needs to have a totally bonkers pattern for that label, but I disagree. Everything about this little one screams jungle in every way possible.

Here's a hypo that I'm pretty sure isn't a jungle. It has some extreme bow-tie action going on which makes it look pretty awesome. The saddles totally connect about halfway down.

Jungle het albino. Link Jr. I love this type of pattern.

The rest all look like jungles to me. I might end up calling a couple of them possible jungles. Here they are.

                        Thanks for looking!
