  • Circle back boas.....What is your definition of ??

OK.. I have noticed a lot of pics posted ol that say the snake is a "circle-backed" boa. YET, I do NOT notice the circlebacking type pattern on the pics of the snakes. I myself do NOT consider a snake to be a circle-backed boa unless it is basically ALL circles on the patterning between the saddles actually. An oval is NOT a circle, a circle is round also. I think that people are calling boas that have the oval type patterns on them between the saddles "circle-backed" boas too often when they are actually more of an oval pattern going on with them. Of course that's just my .02 on the subject. Here's two of my boas that are about as close as one can get to circle-backed without being a FULL circle-back..IMO of course ;D

This one is ANDY..One of my female breeders I keep here...

This one is one of my male breeders..La'Creme..He is the one that I had lent out for a breeding lend that turned out really bad. He is now back in my possession thanx to a friend ;D His babies he sired from that clutch that I found out about were basically pastel, striped tails. He's been breeding some of my other females this year..So we'll see if it was a temp thing or genetic at all hopefully this time round...

OH..AND He is the one that is the light colored one , NOT the dark one [ that is my nasty tempered CA female that I got when I purchased the "pair". Person wouldn't split em up at all and I wanted the male. So had to buy both of them. The pics are from when they had first come in so I had them in quarantine together as they had been always housed together with their previous owner anyways. They are housed separately now and since then though.]

So what do people consider to be a cicrle backed boa actually ? One that has ONLY circles OR ones that have ovals and some circles or what ?

I may be wrong but I think The fine line connecting the saddles make them a circle back. The saddles dont have to be big thick saddles to make them a circle back.

Actually Josh.. That trait is called the "ladder-backing" that you see refered to here and there. Sort of makes the saddles look like they are the rungs of a ladder.....

Here's one of mine that has the distinct ladder-backing going on in her pattern...

AND YES..She does get all blue/purple like that at times also ;D

Here's another pic of her outside. This is the coloring that she usually displays btw.. She is a silver -ladder-backed Guyana Boa...

Re: Circle back boas.....What is your definition o

Well I have yet to see a boa that has all cirlce patterns. I have seen a lot of boas with a majority of circle patterns, but then they have a couple that are no where close to a circle, and break the overall appearance of the pattern. A couple of mine have some patterns that you could use a compass to trace the circle but then several more on the same boa that are not close to being a true circle.

I think a pair of boas with perfect circle back patterns that could prove genetic, would be a GOOD thing to have.

I have always been a fan of the narrow saddle boas, and narrow saddle boas with connecting line patterns make that ladderback trait even better.

Myself and Jeff Ronne beleive that the "Fine Line" boas have Arabesque blood in them, seeing as how Steve Hammonds bred both the Arabesque and produced the first genetic narrow saddle boas that Jeff got his hands on to selectively breed the fine lines as they are today.

So if you are familiar with the Arabesque boa you can see a lot of circleback/ladderback possibilities there.

Circlebacks are more affordable and more common.

Ladderback, Fine Line, and Arabesque are more expensive and harder to find.

I've seen maybe two boas that had PERFECT circles all through-out their patterning. Almost bought one of them last year even.
Yeah I love the ladder backeds also. AND They are harder to find I see also. :'(

                Lori,

Just imagine a future Pastel Circleback, or an Albino Circleback 8)

You know Pete Kahl is selling the Arabesque Albinos for 7500.00

You should have bought those circlebacks for breeding projects. ;D
