  • Breed question

Hello all, I'm new to all this but am tryin to get all the info I can soak up (man.. is it a lot). I wanted to know if there is a way to tell the difference between "nicaraguain", "columbian", brazillian ect.. & what is just normal?. A few months ago I got a baby redtail from a friend of mine who breeds a pair of his & we worked out a trade for pick of the litter. I am trying to find out if possible, I know its not any high $ morph or anything but would still like to see. I'm going to take it to the vet soon & have it probed to be sure she is a she lol. Thanks in advance Darrell

    Re: Breed question

There are many ways of trying to figure out what region you're boa is from... the best way to tell in my opinion... Buy from a reputable breeder... You may or may not know... but the majority of pet shops around selling "Red Tail Boas" are not even the real RTB, They are simply normal Columbians. A few tricks you can use are Scale Counting (Very time consuming), Saddle counts, etc... I would recomend picking up a copy of Vin Russo's "The Complete Boa Constrictor" The book may be a little pricey... but Very Very worth it.

      Re: Breed question

First of all, welcome to the forum. Trying to identify the locality of a unknown boa can be difficult, and without pictures its pretty much impossible. If you could post some pics of "her" it would help.

Forgot to mention... the reason for recommending this book, is because It will teach you how to determine localities and all that good stuff... as well as morphs

Whatever the 2 Boas your friend bred together were that's what your baby is.

If your friend don't know what kind of Boas he has, nobody does !

People can make a guess , but that's all it'll be, is guess ........

Thanks, I'll try to get some pics up. As I said shes not an albino or morph but I love it all the same, but I see now why its better to buy from a rep. dealer. I read that having a cross on its head would be a trait for nics? Thanks again

              Re: Breed question

Lar is correct here. Your boa may be a mix of different localities and passing it off as a certain locality that you or someone thinks it is would be wrong. Unless it came from a reputable breeder that breeds locality specific boas or you have documentation from when it was imported (in certain cases) then you really will never know 100% what exact locality it is from. You can get a good guess as to what region it is from. Examples of this would be Mexican, Central American, or South American. Post pictures and we can try to help but again it will never be 100% since you don't know the origins of the boa for sure, several localities are similar, and people are mixing up all sorts of localities.

                  Re: Breed question

Def looks like a nice normal columbian to me. Who knows thought... you could have some mix in there, lol. This is just one of the reasons why I am not down for cross breeding ( I believe is the word for breeding different localities)... There are just too many things that can go wrong in these cases... say you have a Suriname red tail that was bred with a normal columbian... The litter possess some nice red tails... next thing you know you have a guy selling you suri red tail boas.... little do you know... they are not pure.... so now you breed you're suri with another that you bought from a reputable breeder... and you turn around and sell what you think are 100% redtail suri's... It's just a big mess.... so many things can happen... It can be intentunal or un intentunal... either way... it messess up pure blood lines.

Never the Less... you have a very nice looking boa there

                    Re: Breed question

Very nice boa. I can't tell from the pics but it just looks like a normal to me. I can't or wouldn't put a locality on it but just be happy with it. I don't know the locality of any of my boas and I am ok with that.

Oh man it's so small! I love little boas with their little cute heads. Yours looks exactly like my boa Bella as far as color and pattern but I can't tell you what it is because I'm with JLTerry on this : I don't know the local of mine either! But I love em!

Oh and welcome to the forum. This is one of the best sites on the net! See you around.
