Re: barring in bedding
Please lose the cypress mulch. Not good. It breeds mites. I use the aspen as well and yes that stuff gets on the floor, but I'm not telling my babies they aren't going to be having fun burrowing anymore.

Re: barring in bedding
T.C. I have to disagree with you here. I myself use cypress mulch and would recommend it to anyone. I also know a whole lot of people and even breeders who swear by it. I use to use aspen and it can get messy. Cypress mulch is cheap, holds humidity, and does not rot or mold. It's ups beat the others. I am quite interesting how cypress mulch attracts mites though, as I have not heard a single case related to such. onesweetguy, you should bake it at least around thirty minutes.

Re:barring in bedding
I also have been using cypress mulch for several months now...
Although any wood type substrate would be a great place for breeding of mites, it is important that we take the preventative measures to stop mites BEFORE they can breed and multiply.
I have been using provent a mite for a long time now, and although I have not seen a mite in years, I still do the preventative treatments. To gain knowledge is good, but to share knowledge is wise

Re:barring in bedding
The cypress mulch works great , but , I started using the coconut fiber type . I haven't had any problems at all with this stuff . I like it because it comes in a compressed brick that is easy to store . My brazilian rainbows love it . It keeps their humidity way up like 70-80% , and I hardly ever see them when they are not burried in it at least partially. And They always shed great with it.
Later on,
Dan
