Rats or Mice and why?

Had my baby red tail for 2-3 months now and I've been feeding her fuzzy mice since I got her at the suggestion from the store I got her.

Lately I've read a few different times on these boards that for red tails you should be feeding Rats, not mice...

I'll move her over on her next feeding, since I trust you guys 100x's more than any pet store, but I'm still very curious on why rats instead of mice?

Rats are more nutritional then mice. Also, you should feed your Boa F/T not live prey..

I pre-kill all the prey, I read enough before I bought her about snakes getting bit and such, Sorry should have made that clear... Thanks for the reply mitch...

Yes, you should feed boas rats instead of mice. Mice are nothing more than bones. Rats are far more nutritional.

Hello Weazel,

I agree with both BigMitch and Xzylum. Tars are the only way to go.. My boas are on rat pinks from they day they are born. Nutrition is the reason. Rats have more meat the mice and are higher in raw protien..

Plus Rat's have a lot more fat content. I have this saying that mice are no more than M&M's to my RTB. Hehehehhe

Everyone is right on track with moving to rats as soon as possible, but I would like to mention here that is the boa is small or just born, there is nothing wrong with feeding mice.

A pinkie just born rat, is sometimes too big for the smaller baby boas. A fuzzy mouse is about 1/2 the size of a pinkie rat. So again, if the boa is real small, nothing wrong with feeding mice.

We just recommend moving to rats as soon as the boa is properly matched to the rat sizes you are able to purchase. The rats will accelerate growth and are more nutritional.

Thanks clay, she was a very small girl when I got her... and the mice started getting a little too small, so I started reading thats when I find out about the rats...

Feed her, her first rat on Wed... I was a little paranoid cause I thought it was going to be too large for her... but she didn't have a problem, and I think she liked it more too...

Did take her alot longer to get it swallowed... But she's happier, thanks guys...
