  • The restriction of ventilation

    Hey,
I have about half of the back vents on my vision cage covered in order to get the proper humidity level. The other half is covered by a light, and I have heat light in the light fixture. Is too much of the ventilation restricted?
    thanks

    Re:The restriction of ventilation

well the best way to check is take a small fan and point it to your vents and see if you can feel the ait flow..if you can its good.. if not you may want to back the lights or unblock a vent..thats about all i can think of at the moment.

Have you tryed the clay pot saucers yet... You should be Covering the vent with a piece of towl that is just as thick as a snake bag... Thus it would breath just fine... I chop up snake bags... somtimes...
A wet towl over a vent is kinda' a temp fix.. You really need to find a different way to get the humidity up... I know the clay pots will work but other then that I can't help much... Good luck./

        Thanks alot man,
Im gonna try a thin pillow case. As for the clay pot technique, I remember reading about it in another thread a while ago, could you refresh me? It involves using them as hide spots, right?

          Hey Chambers,

The clay pot trick is simple.. Just get one big enough for the size of a hide. Make a hole in the side so the snake can get in and out.. make the edges dull so the snake doesn't get hurt. Soak the clay pot in warm water for 30 mins and put it in the cage.. its helps with humidity...

          Hope that helped..

Yea I have never done the clay pot thing, I have one in my Boaphile plastic for a hide but havent had the need to soak it yet. I have heard it works really well, you should give it a try.

                Re:The restriction of ventilation

There can be some alternatives to keeping the humidity up. Cypress mulch as substrate will do wonders. No need to worry as it does not rot or mold. Misting the cage twice a day will also work well. The ceramic pots do hold humidity quite well, you may also look into using one as a water dish.

I keep a container of sphagnum moss is my cages. I keep the moss damp and it keeps the humidity right where it needs to be. The containers are big enough for my snakes to fit in it. My ball and my corn love to hang out in these containers and they always have perfect sheds.

                      Re:The restriction of ventilation

I also own a vision cage and a good way to tell if you dont have enough ventilation is to see if condensation builds up on the glass doors in the front. I currently have an amazon tree boa in my vision cage and i keep the humdity at about 75% which rises when i mist. Condensation will initially cover the glass doors but will dissipate (spell) as the cage dries. When I first purchased the cage the condensation would remain and I had to adjust the vents to get the perfect balance.

                        hey,
                        sorry for the late update:
I realized the problem... In this same Vision cage (4x2x1.5), I have a relativley old UTH and I use it with an Analog thermostat. Over time it became less and less effective as a primary heat source, so now in conjunction with the UTH, I started using a heat lamp attatched to a light dimmer. I use this lamp turned down pretty low, and just high enough to make up for the temp deficit that the old UTH creates. The heat lamp, even at a low setting, lowers the humidity quite a bit. Im now using a breathable peice of cloth for slight restriction of ventilation and rel. humidity hovers at around 57-64% daily. - I cant wait to get some new heating equipment, so I can ditch the heat lamp.
                        Thanks for the advice.
