  • Temperment of BCI

I got a baby BCI about a month ago. I let him settle in for a few weeks and I held him for the first time a couple of days ago. He seems to be kinda skiddish and really sensitive about movement. 2 days ago I fed him in a seperate enclosure. I was sitting next to this 10 gallon terrarium after he was done and was getting ready to get him out. I only move 2 inches, and he strikes at me from inside the aquarium. He did it like 3 more times. I finally got him out with a pair of gloves. Should I be concerned about a boa's temper? Aren't they supposed to be more docile than other boas? Do they get better as they grow up? thanks

well what size food prey is it eating and how many did it take cuz if it was just one he may have been still hungry and thought u was a mouse or fuzzy rat outside of the cage. mine snap all the time when i move outside of the tank. all i do is reach in and grab the middle of the body or i let them get out of there tank first then get them and put them back into the tank. o yea how big is he??

My BCI strikes at me everytime after he eats if I walk buy him. I usually let him calm down for a half hour before putting him back into his cage. But I dont pick him up, kinda tilt the feed tank and let him crawl in himself. You have to remember they are in feeding mode, anything that might be food they will strike at.

VERY WELL PUT WELSH THAT IS VERY TRUE.. well all of my boas will strike till i put my hand on there body and they realize i am not food. then i just grab them out being carefull not to touch where the food is lying in their belly so that i don't stress it and cause a regurge and put them straight in thier tanks.

Your boa was probably still in feed mode. It's a good idea to leave them around a half hour or more to let them settle down. I always leave my snakes alone and give them time to settle down and I've never had a problem. Shouldn't be nothing to worry about. However, if your boa starts getting a nasty temper during regular handling time, you may want to work your way up and let him get used to you.

I feed him fuzzies every friday. He is approximately 17" long. One time he struck at me when he was in his enclosure. This was atleast an hour after feeding.

Your boa striking at you after feeding is the result of a feeding response. Your boa is still worked up after dinner and like everyone else has already said, you need to allow him some time to calm down. My boa is absolutely dog tame but after a meal he can become aggressive if I do not allow him enough time to settle down. Now I noticed you mentioned that your boa struck at you from inside the cage awhile after feeding. That simply could be the fact that your boa needs to get used to you and his surroundings. If you routinely handle your boa he should tame down nicely without any problems. This is probably one of the best features about bci and is why they are one of the most popular kept boa species.

my boa rusty was extremely nippy when i got him, eventually they do calm down but when i feed both my boys i take the lid off and let them crawl out on their own, i usually will lay down watching tv about 3 ft from their feed box. they usually come crawling to me they love mommy hehe when they do ill run my finger down the middle of their body pick em up and away they go back into their little housie. they arent usually agressive after feeding but i aint wanting to chance it.
