  • What's in my boa's mouth?

Hey everyone. I picked up my baby boa today and noticed what looked like some dry skin flaking off of the side of his mouth. I didn't want to pull it off so I soaked him in some warm water. After about 10 minutes I pulled him out and saw that it looked real slimy. He then started to check out my leopard geckos tank. By his shear curiousity, he managed to rub his face on the side of the tank and the slimy stuff came off. He then did the same to the other side of his face and more slimy stuff came off. I was relieved that he was able to get it off of himself. He began to yawn a couple of times and I saw what looked like a slimy mucous inside of his mouth. I'm not sure what it is or if I have to do anything about it. Here are what his conditions are and what's happened lately. His habitat is set up with the reptile carpet for his substrate. He ate a pinky rat on Sunday night. His temps are between 92-95 on the warm side, and 80-84 on the cool side. I keep his humidity at about 65%. He gets fresh water every day. I'm stumped, so if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it! Thanks.

    Hi Fonzy,

Sounds like you may have a case of RI with your baby. Its not uncommon. Basic tratment if it is not too advanced it just keep your temps up and warm. Now since I can't see the "slime" you mentioned. Is it possible it is just dry skin that didn't come off in a shed. I know one of my beauty's always tends to leave just a little skin on the side of his mouth. If soaked skin can look like slime. Just keep a close eye on it. If you start to hear popping sounds when you hold the snake it is most likly RI (respitory infection). If you start seeing a slimy foam around the mouth and the snake keeps his head up alot with mouth partialy open, I would get him to a vet. If not, just keep a close eye on him and keep him warm..

    Good luck

8)I think it sounds like RI to and like Steve said watch for him to be holding its head up or doing alot of yawning - opening of the mouth,, sometimes you can see bubbles comming from the mouth..Its very good if he keeps eatting..Lower your humidity some as with RI you dont want alot of humidity..Dont mist him, just make sure he has a water dish for drinking.. And most important make sure hes not around other snakes as they can catch it from him.. Hey Fonz hows the other boa doing??? Hope all goes well and good luck..

Thanks everyone, I think I might just make a trip to the vet to play it on the safe side! BTW Cuda, the other snake is doing pretty good, still no luck with the shed as of yet, tonight is dinner time for him though. Sorry it's been a while since we've chatted, I've been working 13-14 hour days here on base! I'll be getting back to you with details and pics in a few days.
