Haven't gotten a boa yet, but I got a Chinchilla for my girlfreinds birthday. This poses a concern. When I decide to get my new boa, how will it react to other pets in the house??? Of course I wouldn't let it near the Chinchilla, that would be very expensive snake food. But will the boa sense the presence of the rodent in the house??? Can this potentially pose a problem?

i would just make sure u wash ur hands and try to keep the two in different rooms. i have a fried well evil has cats and pet rats with his snakes and has no problem with them at all but still i wouldn't risk it at all keep the snake in a different room and wash ur hands after holding the rodent before picking up the snake to save u from getting tagged.

    hope this helps.

Just make sure to wash your hands after holding the large rodent... There should be no problem if you do that....
        Good luck

I don't see any problems as long as you wash your hands before and after handling your snake. It would be a good idea to seperate the two as far as possible.

Like everyone else said, Just be sure to wash your hands before handling your boa. I personally have 2 rats and 4 mice along with my 4 boas and a python. And it doesn't seem to cause any problems with each other. But I have been tagged a couple times by all of them, by not washing my hands after handling either the rats of the mice. So, you should be fine. Also, don't show the snake the chinchilla directly, other wise he may try to strike. As long as he is well fed, you should have no problems. Also, over time, he'll know that the chinchilla is NOT food. None of my snakes even try to attack any of my cats, because they are around each other all the time.

im with evil, i have no problems with my snakes or cats getting along of course i dont let the snakes crawl around with the cats. if i let them cruise the floor i have the cats put up in a different room. but the snakes can smell the cats on the floor and they dont show any kind of aggression trying to find the Kitty food LOL

Cool. Anytime I think of rodents, my first thought is snake food. But this Chinchillas really cute, I'd hate to have to get rid of him to make room for my boa. Thanks for all your help.

yea bro, my signature says it all. LOL Welcome to the forums and like everyone said, WASh, WASH, WASH. My boa slithers around my dogs all the time but right now she's not big enough to take em, but you can best believe when she gets bigger and it's time for her to get time out of the cage, all the animals i have will be put up for Mary's time out. LOL Again, Welcome. ;D

P.S. You don't have to get rid of the chinchilla, just keep all other pets that could possably be dinner away from your boa when it's his/her time to play outside her enclosure. 8)

Yeah, like has been said over and over, just don't let them cross paths, and wash real well before you grab your snake out.. There was show that Jayson brought up that some idiot played with his pet Chinchila and then went to tend to a 15 foot Burm and he had fun fighting with an attached snake...
Just be careful and not let your guard down..

Well, so far so good. My ball python hasn't noticed anything yet cause I was my hands with deoderant soap after handling the big rat-like critter. Even if he did tag me, it wouldn't do any damage. When I get my boa I'm going to keep it in the living room, far far away from the Chinny. And yes, WeLsH, I seem to remember hearing that washing hands is a good idea. LOL Thanks guys. I've never been in a forum where everyone is this helpful. BTW, the only thing right now that's keeping me from getting a RTB is lack of an enclosure that will contain it fully grown. How long could I get away with using a smaller tank (40 gal) with a baby boa? And where is a good place to get a bigger one for when it starts getting BIG?

Oh yeah, also is it better to get a male or female for your first RTB? Would there be any difference in size or disposition?

                              Hi ToFu,

A 40 gallon tank should be good for about 1 1/2 maybe 2 years till it will need a larger tank...

The main difference between a male and female is size. The males are normaly smaller in lenth and smaller is girth. Other then that, no real difference..

                              Hope this helps
