  • having 2 boas together

    Hi all,

im new here on this forum and new to the idea of having 2 snakes together..

    my question is the following...

Currently I have a 6 foot + Columbian Male in a 230 gallon tank. Yesterday I bought a female Columbian that is about 3 1/2- 4 feet long (basically young). so what I'm asking is if it's ok for them to be together...they haven't faught or anything. actually the male was very interested in her when i put her in. very aware that she was in his tank. no signs of aggression. as of right now both are buried in their aspen on seperate ends of the tank.

ps- the thought of breeding them has crossed my mind. however, i know that she isn't mature yet at that size.

    thanks in advance,

    Khris 8)

    Re:having 2 boas together

well chris, boas arn't really social snakes. It cool to have them in the same tank, but the problem might arise after feeding either one of them. Also, sometimes the presence of another snake can stress the boas out. I'm not saying thats happening or willhappen to your boas but it can. Ifyou can, i'de work on getting or building another enclosure for the younger one, but it's not necessary if you can afford it right now. As far as breeding, steve could answer that question but what I think he told me was that the older they are the better chance it is for breeding and not getting slugs. I think they reach sexual maturity at about 4 years old, correct me if I'm wrong steve. Hope I was of some help. Good luck and welcome to the forums!! ;D 8)

i would get the female her own tank being that the male will still try to mate with her and it will cause stress on her and she is way too young to breed she should be bigger than the male u try to breed her with...

Bad idea to house them together. Try to get a different cage as soon as possible. The male snakes can be very aggressive toward the female when they are trying to mate. Like Jay said, it is ideal to have a smaller male mate a female. Also like Jay said, they are not social animals and get stressed easy, eventually resulting in illness.

              Re:having 2 boas together

              Hello MaximVS,

I just covered my tank on this exact situation in another post, hope you don't mind I am gonna cut and paste it here..

know alot of folks keep two boas in the same tank with no issues, or so it seems..

And the main reason would be that with two snakes, you will have one that is dominate over the other snake. It may not be very visual, but the more dominate snake will take the best hides, take the best basking spot, control the best water dish, etc... The extra stress could lead to several problems for the less dominate, like weight loss, stop feeding, bad sheds, etc.. The full time stress is no good for the snake, and in my opinion should be avoided at all costs.
Also, yeah the female is way to young to try to breed yet, like you said....

Great luck with your new boa.. And welcome to the forums..

              Steve

Don't forget folks. The Care Guide has a great write up concerning housing boas in the same enclosure, and it is worthwhile reading if even considering housing boas together year round.

                            Re:having 2 boas together

I have my two boa's together and they are M/F and they are always together. They seem to enjoy each others company. My two pythons also share the same cage and they are the same way. I bought them together, but they were housed with about 20 other snakes when I got them. I have no problems and think they enjoy the company, lol. When I feed them I have a seperate feeder cage and feed them individually to avoid any problems.
