  • RTB WON'T Let Me HANDLE HIM!!! HeLP

:'(I have a female RTB that's almost 1 yr. old, she is turning 1yr. old on APRIL 24th. When i try to pick her up she just moves so fast and turns her head quickly (she makes fast movements). She doesn't seem to like being picked up nowadays. How can i get her to be more docile and less aggressive? I used to be able to handle her, but i haven't been. So, i don't know what the problem is, so please help. ???

    Thanks,
    Andrew

P.S. last time i handled her was friday april 11th. I fed her on sunday at 8pm and i tred to handle her last night.

the first thing i would check is the conditions in the cage. sometimes when a boa or any other snake for that matter suddenly turns agressive it has to do with an error in cage conditions. if everything is fine then like redtailedmel has already stated you just need to simply continue to handle your boa and the snake should calm down over time.

That depends on the snake themself. You might want to buy a thick pair of leather gloves. Some snakes when they get older will really put up a struggle when you try to get them out, once out, they seem to be fine. Daily handling should eventually resolve it, but that's not always the case.

Should i just put my hands in there and pick her up or just pet her until she straightens out?(Because i usually keep petting her until she straightens out ot pick her up.) Does petting her a lot like i previously said annoy the snake? Because this is my first snake and i'm worried when they look at my hands, it seems like there going to bite. I don't really want to get bit because i'd probably be scared to pick her up the next time if i do get bit.

Well it sounds like you are scared now.... Also it is a year old boa well it just isn't that big.. It will not hurt that much... gloves might be a bit over board but you can use them... I would just put my hand in there and get it bit... but that is me... I also can keep my cool when it happens.. ie I don't jerk my hand back.. that is the only thing to worry about. It can hurt there teeth if you jerk your hand back there spine can be effected as well...
have you checked the snake for any burns or weird look'in skin patches.. Your snake may be uncompterble...
                Good luck..

lol red you are alot braver than me!!! i used gloves just to be on the safe sit but i have been bitten without then and i doesnt hurt, but i usually would slowly place my hand in there touch it a min to let it know i was there then i would easy him out and just hold him and let him crawl all around my arms so he could learn my scent. but whatever way is comfortable for you and the snake is fine

i have never had this problem with my red tail or ball, but this is a problem i deal with everytime i attempt to go into my solomon islands tree boa cage and my green tree's cage. like red has stated, being bitten is like second nature to me now but it did take some getting used too. your best bet is to stick your hand in the cage and gently touch your boa for a few minutes. after that you should be able to pick your boa up. if your boa still acts aggressive you will just have to continue with these gentle handling sessions and after awhile, most boas calm down. also like i have stated before you should check and make sure that the proper conditions in the cage are met, if not your boa will continue to act aggressive.

Gloves come in pretty handy with those that are not brave enough to get tagged. It does takes a few before some will get used to it, but when you own a snake, you are going to get tagged before it's all over. I myself stay pretty calm and don't mind getting tagged. Snake hooks are not a bad idea either if you know how to properly use them.
