I have 15 babies born on 03/13/03, 8 of these have eaten, 5 have had two meals, three have eaten once so far. Which leaves 7 who have not eaten yet I'm getting a little concerned the 8 that have eaten were feed f/t pinky rats, I have read that spliting open heads (that of the pinkies of course)he he might help. Should I give this a try? Any advice is welcome. :-/

I have heard of the splitting the head thing, but I've never used it. I dont think it would help much. Do you sit there and watch the snakes as they eat or do you let them be. Sometimes they are people shy and wont eat when being watched. I have had to hold the pinky to the snakes mouth before and it ate it. i just held it about a centimeter away and it went for it. That works for Emeralds at least.

If ya dont want to split the head open just try cutting the tip of the nose open, this usualy works well, try scenting the prey first with bedding from live prey... Sometimes F/T dont have strong smell to it..

They are fed in tubs that are covered, and kept dark while feeding, didn't have any problems with the first 8 but the last 7 are being stubborn. Boy I'm glad that my rat connection gave me a bunch for pinkies.Comment

Hi,
I know everyone is againts feeding live but with newborn snakes maybe once or twice feeding pinkies ,,to get that feeding response going. The movement of the pinkies will wake that feeding response instantly
I know many breeders will do this with babies ..
I only feed fresh thawed but I ve seen a few baby snakes that convert easily after a couple feedings of live pinkies Did the group your trying to feed already shed or are they in shed.I ve read on another post that most boa breeders don't even try to feed until that first shed (correct me if am wrong) ..I ve seen some babies have a yoke sack a few days after birth they have plenty to eat there..
Good luck are the cages warm enough and is there humidty, I ve often wondered about keeping them in those shoe boxes holders how the heck do you get a temp gradient in all 16 boxes..

Yep you are right there doug, I have also heard that most breeders do not feed there babies until after there first shed. Good point with the yoke sacks, if the young still have them you should not even try to feed them until the sack is gone at least that is what I have heard.Comment

Yes, they have shed babies usual shed about 10 days after birth. I know that some do take longer to eat then others its just a little nerve racking. I always feel better after their first meal after that it seems that they have no problem getting the idea. By the way I use heat tape to heat and the water bowls provide plenty of humidity. I going to try again today will update. 8)
