CHEs do get very hot and tend to dry out the humidity. However, they do heat relatively well and need to be controlled. If the cage you are talking about is mostly wood with a plexi front, you would be best settling for a heat panel. They might be a few dollars more, but heat relatively well and last a long time. Doug, I couldn't really understand if you meant using heat tape on aquariums? I never heard of that being possible. Correct me if I'm wrong.

HI,
there's so many what ifs with this set up, My cages are wood this holds heat and humidty, external che's tend to remove humidity, and have a very short effective range, you would proabably be better with a 75 gal tank heating with a couple uth  on each end and make an effective humidty cover for that screen top out of plexi or insulation material, I buy mine at lowes it is silver on one side and black on the other. It cuts to fit and easy ,with a skil knife and can be coverd with a towel to improve that appearance. I have lost my pictures on another page that had a forty critter set up this way.. If you use a thick substrate uth don't work real well.

as with any heat some type of thermostat or rheostat is important. thsi goes under the glass floor outside of the tanks I would try to cover at least 60% of the cage floor this stuf is cheap and safe if installed as per instructions..

The lowest wattage you can buy and some type of a thermostat device in the loop, it helps prevents over heating they are just to warm to leave on 24/7...    
 the reson some people get away with a tank with che's and no thermostat would be for a lizard that likes really high  temps and low humidty, boa's like warm temps and moderate humidty, or your gonna have problem shed ,dehydration and over heating of the cage.

them thermostats i use are only 29.00 at big apple get a couple one for each tank plug a power strip into the thermostat and you can handle up to 4 heat sources on one thermostat in one cage, place the heat sensor 1 in from the floor and you be groving to the preset temp you dial in

Would a 60 watt heat that whole tank up?

I am using 2 one hundred watt che's in a cage thats 42 inches deep and 6 ft long,, they are totaly enclosed in the cage they have a thermostat to prevent over heating . I would never use a che without a thermostat, never.
  they are ceramaic and can reach temps that will fry your skin , the boa's nose ,set plastic on fire and proably wood.
but if properly contained in a wire cage they are extremly useful
as a heat source.
   my 2 cents

example of using che's safely notice the che cage, notice the thermostat probe in the back of the cage.
 this is the only safe way too use a che. this cage is similar to your cage 2/4  it has two 50 watt che's lower wattage alittle slower to warm up but use less power..
this larger cage has two 100watts che's for heat

I have a Ball python and a red tail. I have 2 75 gallon tanks for each that I have not yet set up. What would U recommend for this?

I would not advice placing the che on the plexiglass, my friend did this and it slighly melted it and discolored it. It also smelt pretty bad. Don't know about glass however.

che's are great. i have one in each of my cages with different wattages and all hooked up to a rheostat. they are a great source of heat and last a very long time.

I haven't heard of anyone useing a CHE in this manner. All you can do is try it I guess Unless someone else on the fourm has advice on this matter.

CHE's work great 2 might be a bit to much.

Can you actually feel the heat coming off it? Can you sit it on things like glass and plexi glass?

I was looking at these and was wondering if anyone uses them? My ball python is in a enclosure I made. It's like a 5 foot bookcase. With 4 feet of actual space. Do you think 2, 150 watt heaters would heat it up nice?
