Is it ok just to use a CHE. i HAVE READ THAT boas are fine without any artificial light. Just the heat pads and a che, is this true? would a vitamin d light help?

    Re: Lighting

Light is not neccessary for boas to be healthy, the get all the vitamins they need from there "complete" meals. I know Clay has even said that all the light his boas get is from natural light coming through the windows. There are some studies however that say boas might get a small benifit from full spectrum light but at the moment I don't think there is any concrete proof. In the end I would say it is not neccessary as most people I know never use it for any of there snakes and it has never been a problem. Just remember that boas get all the vitamins they need because they consume whole animals. In then end the decision is up to you.

      Re: Lighting

As Blackmark said, most people will agree that a boa does not need cage lighting and special lighting like UVB. Boas do need to have a day/night cycle... that can be provided by natural light from a window or artificial light but is very important.

Oh ya, forgot to mention that they require day/night cycles. Thanks Stormyva

          Re: Lighting

personally i have found that with my two boas if i have a light source on in the cage the boas will immediately go to there hide to get away from the light. as soon as the light source is turned off they come back out and hang. so with my boas the only light source i now use is the light from the windows.

The light from a window will provide the day/night cycle. Just don't put your cage in direct sunlight.

              8) I use full spectrum plant lights on my cages as it dont seem to bother my snakes plus its benfical to the live plants i use in some cages and they dont hide all the time.. at night i use black lights on some of my cages and theres no probs with that.. The only snakes i have that hide alot is three of my BP's as the other ones like to be out in the open wondering around, my corn snake comes out of her house daily and also as soon as you go by her cage she thinks your gona feed her as shes a real pig all the time.. ;D My JCP seems to like being by the full spectrum plant lights more than anything up on a branch thats the closest to the light..

                Re: Lighting

                HI,
My guyana hide when i turn on the lights in the room,
The light from the window can shoot the temp up 10+ degrees in a couple mins. I opened the blinds in my snake room and the morning sun was shinning in the cage and almost immedately the temp spikes and this was during the winter months. I opened the blinds to improve my picture taking light of some boas and when I went back to the cage with the sunlight shinning in it I was shocked the temp was almost 98 degree's, so be sure if your cage is facing a window the sunlight in the morning and or evening isn't shining in that cage, those daily temp spikes will proably make a boa sick with time if it don't fry his brain the first time..
                  doug :P.

I agree with Damian. My snakes get light from the window but I also use a reg. strip light along my 75 gallon and have it set on a timer to go off before it gets dark. They seem to hide when the light is on but could that be because they are nocturnal also? I'm going to try a week of just daylight from the windows and see if there is a difference...
