  • Feeding?

Hi everybody, I have a 11 month old BCI which is about 3 feet long. At the moment I feed her one adult mouse every 7 days. I was wondering is this enough as it just barly makes a lump in her and she sometimes is acting hungry a few days later. Should I feed her more and if so should I go with hamsters as the only rats avalible up here are jumbo adults? Sorry I do not have a pic to show you her size but as I said a adult mouse just barly makes a lump and I know that each meal is to be big enough to make a slight increase in the girth of the animal. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Re: Feeding?

Definately sounds like she needs to be fed ,ore of a meal now no doubt. UMM.. Feed her hamsters ? That would be an expensive meal .wouldn't it ? No smaller rats huh ? Your in Canada right ? That bites that ya can't find any smaller rats there. have you tried looking around for an ol supplier up your way for them at all yet ?
For now though.. if you fedd the snake hamster..it prolly would be a good enough sized meal from the sounds of it. BUT... Hamsters are a very fatty type of feed to be using and I wouldn't think that would be a great thing to be doing really for your snake without any valid reasoning such as needing some weight gain or one of the attempts to get a long time non-feeder onto eating again at all. PLUS snakes tend to not want anything else after they have been fed hamsters also [ ball pythoins are notorious for this one hehe]. Plus what are ya gonna do when the snake is not large enough for a large rat, but needs an even larger prey than a hamster also ? Down here hamsters are like $8 each..OUCH ! lol
Try doing this for the snake for feeding for now. Offer it 2 mice every feeding. Feed the snake every 7-10 days also like this. You should see a difference in the snake and it's hunting mode it's down now also if ya feed like that. I really wouldn't take the snake further than 2 prey items like this though at all myself as the norm. I sometimes will offer 3 prey like this if the snake is MAJORLY underweight and I need to maintain it on a smaller prey item for one reason or another.

      Re: Feeding?

Thanx for the info. I wish there was a cheap way to get rats but my province Alberta is said to be rat free, cwm1.gif lol so they are ilegal in any form but dead so it kinda makes it hard to get cheap ones. Hamsters are fatty huh, didn't know that, I knew they were addictive though thats why I asked. What about degus (chinchilla rats, pet store breeds them some times for food), are there any probs you know about them? They are larger than mice but a tad expensive. Most people round here just feed multiple mice until the snake is large enough to take a rat. Although some use geni pigs (sp) or really small dwarf rabbits when they are avalible. Thanx again for the info

        Re: Feeding?

OK.. How about the rabbits then. If ya can link in with a breeder that supplies them as feed.. Then you could talk with them about setting up something so that you get the sizing that you need of them also for your snake. those would be better than trying out a hamster IMO. I breed rabbits here.. they come in sizing that you could use np.. just gotta wak em off when they reach the size needed is all. '
As for the other thing...degus.. I am not familiar with them at all actually . So couldn't say much in regads to them at all

Other thing ya could do is to move to the states..NYC.. New York City. They are from from a rat free zone lol... Allthough reptiles are illegal within the 5 burroughs of that city... ??? LOL

            Re: Feeding?

Thanx Lori, I'll see what I can do about finding a breeder who can meet my size needs. About that idea of moving to the states, well what would I do without my strong Canadian beer and winter temps of -40 C ;D. Besides I would get tired of answering all the questions about my dog-sled and igloo! lmao

Who needs beer anyways ? Canadian or not hehe The temps...Your snake[s] would prefer the tropical climate of NYC in the winter time that is a lovely 40 degrees F compared to that -40 C that ya get there. Your on your own in regards to the dog sled and igloo though : LOL
