  • [Behavior] Is there a special process.

is there a special process to take when doing a transition to mice to rats. I have never had a prob, but i tried a very small rat with one of my snakes tonight and she wrapped. but then she turned away and would come back to sniff but never tried. I mean even with a very small rat, it was still a little bit bigger that the mice she normally eats. She will eat three mice so I figured a very small mouse might take that place. Any suggestions?

Brain a mouse and rub the mouse blood on the nose of the rat. This worked for me when switching growing BPs over to rats.

You could also store them in the same bag together while they are frozen. The smell will transfer between the two.

My suggestion: keep at it. Your boa will take the rat before letting itself starve.

Personally: I've never had a problem (knock on wood).

b3napoleon's suggestion will probably work, but IMO braining is more of a "what to do when all else fails" scenario. I know plenty of folks have done this, but if this is the first refusal I'd wait a week and try again. If after a few weeks he's still not taking the rat then try braining. But chances are he'll take it before you need to do that.
