  • Should I keep my dog away from my snake

Is there any health reason to keep my dog away from my snake? At the moment Ruby is to small to hurt Pugsly (my dog). Pugsly is very curious about Ruby, and a bit jealous.

Now it might be ok but when your boa gets to its adult size then I would keep them away from each other. There was an incident in LA where an adult boa was seen eating the neighbors pet chihuahua.

Will a Boa get big enough to eat a 40 to 50 lb. pitbull

no your boa more than likly is not going to get big enough to eat a 50lb pit bull. Dogs carry little blood sucking critters like ticks on them that also love to get on snakes because they cant scratch them off. I dont let dogs or cats around my snakes.

Can she kill/eat the Pit Bull??

The real question is : do you want to find out? Either way somebody will get hurt, either the Boa or the Pit (or both). The Boa will strike to defend herself, the Pit will also for the same reason. If the Boa gets a bite of the Pit, she will hang on for dear life, and try to coil. The Pit, of course, will do what he has to do, and I am sure a 50Lbs Pit can kill a Boa of just about any size.

This is just an encounter you don't want to hear about. I have 5 dogs in my house and they all stay away from the snakes. They have free roam around the cages, but they never come even close to smell them when I have them out. I try to teach them to stay away from them, in case one escapes someday and they run into it.

I will asume you love your animals, and that you understand it is your responsability to keep them safe from harm.

            Hi,
tensions run high when an animal is presented with a situation and no possible positive outcome.. Example would I show a cat my canary,,   naw that could have a very negative outcome..
Snakes are scared of everything that aint familar, and you may get a slap towards the doggie that could scratch an eye. And one well placed nip from even a small dog and your off to the vet for shots so mr snake dosent get some type of doggie bite rot..
the nastiest infection I ve had to date was from a nip  :Pto the hand from some little fuzzie white poodle my hand looked like a bite by a rattle snake at 24 hours and I had to have it opened cleaned in  the OR and some very tasty antibiotics for a couple weeks... yeach.. the bite was a single tiny bite near my thumb.. DOGGIE GERMS> ???>> I never get infections from my snake bites . :.

I'm not worried my dog will bite Ruby. I just wondered if they could be around each other. I'm teaching her to stay away. I don't want to get Ruby nursed back to health, just to have my dog step on her.

Re: Should I keep my dog away from my snake

I see nothing wrong with having them around each other as far as in the same house.  I have 5 cats and 5 snakes and none of them attack each other, but then again, I don't give them the chance. The snakes are in the cage when we play with the cats, the cats stay off our laps when we play with the snakes.  ;D Just don't let them get too close or too freaked out by each other. Let them know that each other is there, just be carefull and try not to let the other get freaked out by each other. If the dog seems to want to play with the snake, put an imediate stop to it and make sure that the dog knows that the snake is not a play toy. If while handling the snake it seems stressed out and seems to want to strike at either you or the dog, put it back in the tank and allow it to hide and calm down and don't play with it for awile. The lesson here is to just be careful!!!!! cwm15.gif
