  • Thank you moderators and posters!

Hey everyone, its me the red tail newb guy. Anyways, u guys have been a great help to me in learning about my boa constrictor. Besides that I need to get him a bigger cage, me and my snake have adjusted with each other pretty good. I think Im keeping him up pretty good besides that I need a bigger cage with a hide and some other things. Im starting to learn his actions and reactions. I just wanted to say thanks to lori and doug and all others who have helped me with my first snake!

P.S. one week from today ( last thursday ) I fed him what the pet store labels as a small rat...it was the first time I got him to eat since having him for almost a month and boy was it on, rat didnt even get to recover from being dropped in the cage...well....ive got his body motions down to where I can pen point when hes hungry or not. Well he was acting suspicious and moving around a lot again today and yesterday just like he was doing the first time I got him to eat so I went and got him another rat hoping my suspicions where correct, and they were. He ate the rat within minutes of putting him in the cage. Which brings me to my next question. My snakes prolly about 3 and 1/2 foot long so the first rat I ever bought him was a medium sized rat, well he never was hungry or didnt want to eat the medium so fearing that the rat was too big I took him back and got a small one which he ate within a weeks time from purchase. Well that was last thursday and today when picking up his second meal I decided to go with another small not wanting to push my luck with his eating. The only thing is I dont know if Im getting the right size rat or if he needs bigger one cause it seems as if the small rats barely phaze him and he still kind of stalkingly hobbles around his cage afterwards as if hes looking for something else and he gets the rat all the way down fairly easily. Currently hes averaging a 2.99$ rat a week which is 4 small rats a month. I thought of moving him up to bigger rat after his next shed but thought Id consult you guys first. So from what ive said, does it seem like Im over feeding him by feeding once a week, or am I feeding just right, is he hungry more frequently cause the rats small or do I need to attempt a bigger rat on a every other week basis. Keep in mind last weeks meal was his first in a 3 week to a month time period. Thanks.

    Hi,
And your welcome, please review the care sheets for feeding rodents to snakes.[ftp]http://www.redtailboas.com/general_care/general_care.html[/ftp].
Try and convert  to frozen thawed this will reduce the risk of parasites being transfered to your snake, freezing kills the parasites, worms , fleas, mites all the nifty things rats can carry
good luck with that boa, keep 3/5 cards on your feeding cycles one per snake on the cage. I stick them in the glass edges of them forty critter tanks
each cage/snake has a feeding card.

      example
       12/26 1Mrat
        01/02 shed
         01/07 Poo
these thing help to identify paterns that are useful for ID when something has changed.  Your very welcome..

OK.. First off...Your snake doesn't eat it's prey size by the length of the snake at all. What's used is the girth..ie.. the largest part of the body around it at the widest point. That is what you need to use for judging what size prey to feed your snake. It is possible that your snake was judging the medium prey that you were offering to it as too big, and therefore didn't even attepmt to take it at all. OR Your snake was not hungry as yet , possibly had not settled in as yet when you offered the prey to it at all.
Regardless of what the reasoning is at this point though.. stick with the small rat sized prey that the snake is taking from you atm. If it is too small by the girth rule..then just feed the snake in a multi prey item mode for a bit is all. I would just go with something like ..
      1 prey...
[ how old is this snake again ? If young still then go with 7 days...if older then a year go with a 10 day schedule is all..nm.. at 3 1/2' just go with a 7-10 day shedule is all np.]
      7 days later : 2 prey...
      7-10 days : 1 prey..
and just keep doing like that for awhile is all. If the snake doesn't take the second prey.. don't freak though. Some will not. If he does, np then. BTW.. Only offer the second prey if the snake is still hunting mode after the first one also.
Any way you can post a pic of the snake ? Then we couyld prolly tell you the sized prey it should take also. Better to have the snake feeding, even if a smaller prey item, then having it not feed IMO.
