  • Feeding probs

Tonight I tried to feed my boa as usual. She took the rat from me and constricted it as usual, but she didnt eat it. I tried feeding her agian and she did the same thing. She has never done anything like this before. She looks healthy and ate a pup rat just 8 days ago. She is a little over a year old.

Does anyone know why she may be doing this?

    Thanks

    Re: Feeding probs

    Hi there;
There could be many reasons why the snake is not eating this time. Anything from it is just not hungry up through there is a health problem going on with the snake. First.. start off with your husbandry..
What are your temps , humidity etc like ? actual #'s please..
Next.. IS your snake due to shed or in blue at all ? When was the last time it shed even ?
How about poop.. when was the last time the snake did this ?
Those will help us to try and help you out with figuring out what's going on atm with the non-feeding possibly..

      Re: Feeding probs

My temp is at 82 degrees on the cool end and 90 on the warm at all times. She just shed last friday the 13th and pooped the same day also.

        Re: Feeding probs

90 is a little too warm for BCI (is this the type of boa we're talking about?). I would take it down 2 degrees on both the cool end, and the warm end. Also, there needs to be a drop in temperature during the night cycle, 4 degrees on both sides works great.

How do you feed your snake? in the cage, out of the cage? Night time, day time? Live, fresh killed, frozen/thaw?

Sounds like the correct size and frequency of feeding.... hmmm. -Juggalo

I dont know what her deal is. She is a hogg island boa. She is not acting funny and is still active in her cage. I feed her in a feeding tub lined with newspaper. I usually feed her at night but it hasnt ever mattered in the past. She has always ate like she was a hog. Im going to try and feed her agian tomarrow the last time she ate was Sept. 14th. She also shed right before that.

Well she ate so I guess she just wasnt hungry. I guess I need to start feeding her every 10 days or so.

            Thanks for all the help.

              Re: Feeding probs

              HI,
I have a hog island and she's a bit grumpy on feeding day,
I usually go almost 14 day's between feedings.
I usally have to play games to get her to finally feed on that FTR. She will attack the dangling thawed rat and drop it and spin on me glaring at me for watching. I'll pick it up again and we will play tug a rat for a while this gets her really in the mood to feed.
after about three drops i sneak out while she's constricting on it for the third time and she'll eat.
My other boa's will pick it off the floor without any coaxinin g in their feed boxes,
sometimes she eats on the second try usally the third.
I don't mind , just be careful the can give you a little nip,
she jumped at me one time when I was retreving the rat and gave me a slap no blood not a scratch.

good luck them hogs are cute though.

Mine does the same thing also. Sometimes I have to dangle the FTR in front of her a couple of times before she will eat it. She will never take a rat off bottom of the tub I always have to hold it in front of her.
