  • Go Outside??

    Hi All,

I have a couple of questions.

My sons see photos of boas outside and have asked if we can take ours out. Here are my questions.........

1- We live in TX. Do I even dare think about it with fire ants and all?

2- Can they get mites if you take them out side?

We have been lucky with health so I don't want to jepoardise anything by doing something stupid.

But then I wonder if the sunshine would be good for them?

Just like a Mom to worry about her 'kids' ;D. Only difference between the boas and the boys though......I know the boys WILL get into fire ants and they WILL bring something back in with them (although no mites yet, just creepy crawlies!! ).

    Thanks,

    Mrs.Z

The ants are fine, but the mites.. maybe. Your choice, the snake would like it, and I know alot of people that have big boas that let them chill in there front lawn.

I know they love it when I carry them out. I'd love to put them down but I'm just chicken. I hate to expose us to something that could have been prevented. Our fire ants are vicious. I've seen them eat tarantulas alive. The worst is you can't always tell where they are anymore. It's like they don't build a mound to purposely get you. And I don't have a clue how you get mites......I just know they are a pain to get rid of.

I wouldn't worry to much about the ants. If they are out in the grass I would assume you would be around keeping an eye on them...so if something was going to happen you could tell. But i bring my red tail outside all the time and she just loves in...I can never have an easy time getting her to back into the cage !!!

Nah, they should be fine. We take ours out for a romp when time permits. He really enjoys it. Of course, be sure to keep an eye out for any varmints that may wish them ill. They're easy enough to spot before they could get to your babies, though.

                      Re: Go Outside??

If you have provent-a-mite in the cage It will probly take care of the few one's that may get on your snake... When I take mine out side and put them in the grass I just soke them in the tub after for like 20 min's... If there where any mite's that would probly take care of them since they would not have time to set them self's in... But I guess that is the chance you take... I guess this is like when you bought your kid's a bike...(Just an example) You knew that they where going to crash at sompoint but that is ok... Although mite's should be avoided I don't think that it should be at to drastick of a cost... They realy seem to like the sun and the grass... They need to play somtimes too..

I bring my 3 month old Redtail out in the front and back yard every once and awhile. He seems to love it..except when he hides in the grass! I believe if you just keep an eye on them and don't let em go too far you should be ok

                          Re: Go Outside??

                          Hey Wen..... I mean Mrs Z. ;D

The snakes will be fine outside in the grass as long (of course) as they are properly monitored. I try to get my boas in the sun some as well, but it is harder with the adult breeders. The babies do fine.

Just watch out for our Texas fire ants!!!

Also try to avoid trees!!!!!! I remember one time thinking, "Oh what a great picture, I will put him on this limb".
                          s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif s3.gif

I almost had to cut the tree down to get him off the limb. Well okay that is a little exageration, but they can easily become difficult to get "loose" from a smaller tree.

The provent-a-mite product is the answer to all your mite or "possible" mite problems. If you are treating with provent-a-mite, then there is no danger that you could accidentally bring "passengers" back into the enclosures.

Remember folks. This product not only kills mites it is PREVENTATIVE.
