Re: Do snakes have salmonella????
Yes I believe a persentage do have salmonella thats wy we should wash our hand after handleing of the snake Its mostly in the feces. I found this-----Always wash your hands well with soap and water after handling your snake or the cage accessories. Snakes, like most animals, may harbor dangerous bacteria such as Salmonella.-----As well as other topics on snakes and the desiese.

Re: Do snakes have salmonella????
I heard that one of the ways you can get salmonella from a snake is if you leave feces in there, it dries, you try an clean it out, it's dusty and you inhale it. :P There are probably loads of other ways to get it, but that's just one of the ones i know.

Re: Do snakes have salmonella????
reptiles have samonella in their digestive system to help them with digestion. to be safe I wash my hands before and after I hold my snakes with antibacterial soap. Do that and dont handle their crap and eat a burger and you will be ok cwm36.gif

Re: Do snakes have salmonella????
I kinda knew they did but I didn't know all the facts. Alota people don't realize it but they do have salmonella but its not to easy to catch. after all the media loves to crash snake owners so if they got ahold of imfo regarding snakes as sick and diseased animals they'd be all over that like the Snakes that "kill" people.

Re: Do snakes have salmonella????
HI,
You proably have more bacteria salmonella and shigella in the freezer on that frozen chicken than you could believe, and that frozen hamberger can be a tad buggy from time to time.
I uses to work in a lab that worked up food born illness cases, and food is loaded with bacteria. They gut and then de-feather chickens in huge vats of hot water using a huge automated conveyer system thats just loaded with bugs... sooo if you get sick it may have been your lunch someone didn't cook enough or use a bleach solution on the counter after cutting up chicken. or wash their hands ... yeach cwm8.gif
i made my self sick...One of the worst cases of ice cream induced food poisioning occured because someone hauled frozen chicken in a freezer on a semi-truck and didn't steam clean the freezer post unloading as policy dictates and then hauled some ice cream cartons.. Most of the bugs were on the outside of the containers but how many people are careful when they dip ice cream..... s11.gif
Better stop for now or everyone gonna be anorexic...hehe
there are good bacteria the can be found in yougart and some cheese and help prevent numerous problems..

Re: Do snakes have salmonella (corrected)?
Well by the time I got to this post, there were 7 different spellings of Salmonella. I took the liberty of correcting them so that everyone knows we are talking about the same thing.
Good job Ryan and Doug. Yes many many reptiles, including boa constrictors, carry salmonella in their gastrointestinal tract.
Problems with Salmonella in boa usually affect older or sick boas. Most healthy young boas are never affected by the natural amounts carried.
However you are MUCH more likely to contract Salmonella just by taking store bought chicken out of the package. To gain knowledge is good, but to share knowledge is wise

"Problems with Salmonella in boa usually affect older or sick boas."
Can anything be done to prevent overabundant amounts in old boas? I mean, when they get older, do their keeps stand a greater chance of contracting it?
