Rocky is a columbian Red Tailed Boa, and right now I have her temps at an ok level but they are not optimal. I would like to heat things up another 5 degrees F. I have Rocky in a Lizar Lounge that measures 4'Lx18"Wx2'H. I have a zoomed undertank heating pad #RH 6 along with a 100watt T-Rex day heating lamp bulb. At night I use the heating pad along with a 100watt T-Rex red day/night heating lamp bulb.

Any suggestions on how to raise the temps another 5 degress?

It is a little hard to raise the temps that little, but maybe putting cage a little in the sun, ( not much ) but a little would warm it up.

A lizard lounge is an all glass enclosure made by Oceanic Systems Inc. I don't have a digital camera yet but I can give you their website address.

I would attempt to change the heating lamp and use a CHE. They seem to provide better ambient heat and they can be left on 24X7.

I never used the heat lamps. Too volitale and pretty expensive for as often as you have to replace them. A CHE may cost more up front but they last a long long time. I have had CHE's in place for over 3 years now and they are still going strong. Of course they are regulated to provide the perfect heat requirements.

            Re: Heating

I am thinking of trying 150watt heat lamp bulbs instead of the 100watt. I have been talking with the pet store that sold me the Boa and vivarium. We both think a 150watt would definitly give me the temps I need. But he is consulting some people he know to see if it will provide too much heat. If that is the case, and they will provide too much heat I may try the Ceramic heat emitters. So I'll see what I can do and tell you all how it goes in a couple of days. thanks all.

              Re: Heating

if you decide to use a 150 watt bulb you should hook it up to a rheostat this way you can regulate the temps. all heating devices should be hooked up to a rheostat.

Get a Ceramic Heater Like Clay said, I have one that is a 60 watt for my baby Boa and it works perfect. I keep it on 24 hours.

                  Re: Heating

The Pet shop saide that the light fixture for the Lizard lounges can't take 150watts so I am going to go with the Ceramic Heat Emitter. The only question is with an all glass top, what lighting can I use to provide the Day light cycle?

                    Re: Heating

i am going to be using a 4' flourescent in my new set up, the fixture i am going to be getting from Home Depot and the cost is about $30 ( that is canadian dollars so american it would be about $2. lol )
it worked well for my fish tank set up, infact i had to reduce the bulb size because it was to intense and producing to much alge. some people say that snakes do not benifit from the effects of using a full spectrum bulb, but i figure it won't hurt either. the bulbs should be replaced every year because they loose their ability to produce the full spectrum of light after about 1 year even though the bulb still seems to work fine.
hopefully i have shed some light ;D on the topic, good luck!!

                      Re: Heating

You dont need a light, let the light that is in your room act as the natural light hours and **** like that. Just keep your window open.

                        Re: Heating

I'll be picking up the 100watt CHE on wednesday this week. As for the left over 100watt Red heat lamp bulbs, I'll be giving those to my Ball Python named Crusher that I have had for exactly 1 year as this month. She is shedding this week last time I measured her she was 28 1/2 inches in length. I am guessing she grew another 1inche and a half, but I'll still go ahead and measure her. I feed on saturdays, luckily her eyes didn't turn milky yet so she fed last week. I have been feeding her small rats. The one thing I hate is having to remove ticks. I had crusher mite and tick free and then I found a small tick on her near her belly scales. It was such a pain to get of becuase it was wedge underneath the scales, but with the aid of tweezers I got it off. My Red tail named Rocky is so different when it comes to eating I swear Rocky is an eating machine. Rocky eats, defecates, and is ready for another feeding. One time I dropped a mouse in there for Rocky to eat and Rocky caught the thing as it was dropping. any way thanks for all the advise. I tell everyone how thing work out with the temps later this week. ;D

I just put in the CHE. It is a 100watts. So hopefully it will heat things up right. As far as the day cycle goes I will try just using the lights I have on in my room and see how Rocky reacts. If Rocky likes it, then I won't bother getting a florescent light.
