  • [Behavior] Restless adult male boa constrictor

I have a 7 1/2 foot adult male red tail boa (about 20 lbs) and for the last 18 months he has been in a cage I had built for him and has been content to lay around until feeding time. For the last week or more he has been crawling around a lot and trying to push his way out of his cage. He is well fed and nothing has changed concerning his husbandry. There is nothing apparently wrong with him including the absence of mites. Can anybody explain this sudden change in behavior?

Could be something as simple as the change of seasons, or some other change in his environment.

Any new sources of vibrations (TV, Stereo) that might be disturbing him?

Have you changed anything? I had a friend once who's boa went nuts when she switched brands of deodorant.

None of things you mentioned have occurred. He kind of reminds me of a male tarantula I had that "knew" it was mating season and was constantly roaming his cage. But I don't think that is it.

Isn't it possible for male boas to act that way when they are sexually mature and it is breeding season? I'm not sure but I think I have heard of that happening before.

It is breeding season and that may have something to do with it. My mature males are cruising their cages too. He may go off feed as well so don't be surprised if he does. This is normal behavior.

Thanks to everybody that chimed in. I thought it might be because of breeding season but of course I wasn't sure. I would be VERY surprised if this guy ever goes off feed. Of course my adult male ball python is fasting again. He went 8 months last year without eating. Let's see how long he goes this time.

If I wait till he goes into shed and his eyes fog up they would all be "blind dates".
