• [Misc] First feeding

so tomorrow is his first feeding with me. People have told me not to feed in another cage. But according to the cate guide I should not feed on loose coconut she'll substare and that's what I have any suggestions?

Re: First feeding

Put down your choice of paper plate, cardboard box lid or newspaper to feed on...but use tongs to do that, as your snake may just 'like' (& strike!) your 'warmth & motion', especially if you have the rodent nearby.
You'll find that our snakes can smell any food in the room much better than you think...never under-estimate their sense of smell.

Re: First feeding

It really boils down to personal preference. Feeding in a separate tub works for some people. I personally don't do that. But then I am not interested in moving my three 6 ft + females back into cages after feeding them.
As for feeding them on their substrate, if you feed wet prey items like I do, you probably don't want to get a bunch of crud on there. Follow Noelle7206's advice. I'd recommend paper plates over towels.

Sorry about the mixed messages, I feed inside my enclosures, just put down a paper plate/cardboard and feed on that.

Re: First feeding

Its always ok to start hook training. Its better to start them at a young age. I use to feed my snakes inside there enclosure but for some reason i find myself getting the bedding out of there mouth, so most of the time i put them in a tub and feed them and my bigger ones i feed on my kitchen food. Hook training i also help big time if you decide to continue to feed inside enclosure. Hook training will also let your snakes know when its feeding time or handling time. One of the caution areas of feeding inside in enclosure is when you reach your hand inside to pick them up and you receive a bite LOL.

Imo , the care guide needs help. But its better than any advice from a pet store.
