  • [General Care] New Owner

Hello. I am thinking about getting a boa. It's my first snake but I do have some experience with my sisters ball python. I have heard that boas get aggressive as they get older. Is this true? Any other tips would be great. Thanks.

All boas are different. If most are docile when they are babies, they often remain docile into adulthood. They key is maintaining proper husbandry and regular handling sessions.

Thanks everyone. I have read the care guide and really enjoyed it. I definitely won't buy based on colour, although I really love the look of a motley. What size enclosure do you think is best for an adult male?

Thanks. Why is plastic preferred over glass?

Welcome to the forums, to answer your question, boas are not aggressive. Before getting any boa you do some research on the snake you want before you get it. There are some awesome people on the site that can and will help you on any question you may have. So don`t be afraid to post what you need to know if your unsure or any problems or experiences. Best of luck to you!

                    Re: New Owner

Boas actually tend to be more defensive when they're younger and calm as they age. Proper husbandry and handling and reducing stress as much as possible will usually lead to a calm boa. But each animal does have it's own temperament so you might find one that is aggressive.

Thanks again. I would really love a boa but my mom is scared of snakes. She can tolerate a ball python but she's not to sure on the size of a boa. How big to males get(thickness) and how fast do they grow?

Boas can reach anywhere between 6-8ft and as far a thickness that all depends on how your feeding schedule. But keep in mine that over the years of keeping any snake they do get bigger and larger

I have a 4 year female weighing 30 pounds at 8 feet long. Feeding on one 3XL rat every 2 weeks. I can't fit both of my hands around her and she's solid muscle.

There are many variables, but most males are generally less than six feet. As far as size of the cage, a snake this size would be fine in a 4x2.

If she's only four now, she's going to be a monster when she's fourteen.
