[Behavior] The Snake soaked all day yesterday in his pool

Greetings,

My four-year-old red-tail boa, The Snake, has been acting normal in every way, except he soaked in his pool all day yesterday, and was still in there this morning when I left for work. He has been eating normally and thermo-regulating. He last ate on Saturday. The temperatures and humidity are good in his enclosure (I follow the Boa Care Guide).

He did this one time last year as well. Has anyone else noticed this behaviour in their boas?

I wouldn't worry about it...our snakes don't 'get out much'...maybe he's just bored?

Soaking is not quite the big deal that some make it out to be.

There are always things to check for that could be concerning such as mites, proper humidity levels, and proper temperature gradients in the enclosure; however, just because a snake is soaking does not mean that something is absolutely wrong. The snake could be preparing to defecate or simply lounging around in the water.

Not every snake does this and sometimes you will have a snake that never does this, but I have had one that you could barely pry out of his water bowl. There were no husbandry or health issues, he just simply preferred to be in his water bowl the majority of the time.

My Boa and Ball will lay in their water dishes from time to time.

I fiqure they need it or it's just another behavior.

Thank you all. He wasn't in the pool when I got home from work yesterday and now he's in his stone hide, after lounging this morning on the cool side of his enclosure. All seems normal. I wonder if he knows how I worry about him. teehee

You betcha. Our biggest girl "plays anaconda" from time to time. Usually she only will soak for a day or so occasionally but this last month she spent a few days in there so I removed the water tub and replaced it with a small bowl she can't fit into to let her dry out a bit. Her husbandry is spot on, no reason for the extended soaking period she just likes to play anaconda.
