  • [Substrate] Thoughts on this aspen?

I am getting a RTB this weekend (Repticon). I told my friend that I needed substrate but, I didn't have time. So, she took it upon herself to buy me Zoo Med Shredded Aspen. I told her thanks but, I've never used it. Zoo Med Aspen Snake Bedding, 24 Quarts (she bought me this one, the biggest they had). So, what do y'all think/ know of this aspen? Should I freeze it or something? Thanks y'all. But, on a side note, I am SUPER excited for Repticon this weekend and can't wait. Getting a male colombian and gonna name him Krieg (from Borderlands 2).

I have used Zoo med with no problem. It has already been heat treated for parasites. You should fine.

I used to use the Zoo Med stuff but then I found aspen in 20qt bags at Walmart for $3 a bag. It is pretty dust free and seems to work pretty good. Its not as finely shredded as the Zoo Med stuff but works just as good for 1/4 the price which is great when I change out 3 cages every month. And I never freeze the stuff, never had problems.

Do y'all feed on this? I have always been a fan of feeding-in-a-different-tub technique but, I don't think they make a tupperware box big enough for a 6 foot boa to comfortably feed in. So, I want to start feeding in cages. I've started hook training the animals I already and will hook train Krieg asap but, is it safe for them to ingest this aspen?

Zoo Ned's product is great and it's good that you are starting the hook training process. As far as feeding in cages. It's okay to do so, and it's also why the hook training is good to use. They will know the difference between feeding and handling time. I myself feed some of my snake in there cage and some I put in a tub to feed.

I feed my sand boas and hognose on aspen and have no issues. I use the big bags of native earth (harland teklad) aspen. Some people freeze before use to kill any mites that might be in the bedding, but I have never done this and I've never had any issues arise from it.

I would definitely feed in the cage and hook training is an excellent way to tell the snake that it's not feeding time. Good luck finding your boa!

I feed in the cage and have done so for years and have never used a hook. My big girl mostly just goes into food mode when she smells a rat, not when I open the cage door. All of my snakes have eaten a few pieces of aspen here and there. It doesn't hurt them. I would try and avoid having them eat a mouthful or two but that applies to any substrate.

Do y'all use anything special to keep them from eating aspen? I have heard of people using paper plates or napkins. I have already setup his tub with an inch or two of aspen and got the temps right (tbh im scared to turn off the heat pad bc it took me forever to get the temps correct. lol) and I want to know if I need to make space for a plate or something.
