  • [General Care] RTB smells weird?

My Red Tail Boa Allelujah (AKA Athrun) smells weird. I noticed the other day when I was handling him. It's not a strong smell, but it doesn't smell normal. Should I be worried about him? I have the humidity at about 80%, and the temp 89 degrees hot side and 82 degrees cool side. I usually use newspaper, but I decided to try reptibark last week. I have two water bowls that are changed every day. Just some info

Hmmmm. You took a good whiff of the Reptibark? What kind of a smell is it? A bad rotten smell, a Poo smell, a chemical smell?

If that were my snake, I'd gently give him a bath in case the smell is from, well, him sliding through some poo in the cage. (have you also checked for any regurgitated meals in his cage??? they smell the worst!)

Then, if there's nothing coming from the cage (the Reptibark etc), and he is clean...I'd be wondering if he has some sort of infection causing the odors...might be best to get him seen by a vet.

You can bathe him in some barely warm water with a few drops of baby shampoo, then rinse him off in clean water after and towel him gently. But also check the entire cage as suggested by Noelle.

One of the reasons I like newspaper as a substrate: Easy to spot poo, regurges etc. Easy to dispose of and replace. With reptibark you probably may not see any stuff the snake has put out from either end.

Exactly! The substrate gets pushed around & covers over whatever came out of the snake...& there it lies, stinking plus being a health hazard.
