  • [Feeding Issue] Did not eat

Ok so this was my first round of feeding my Trinity a small rat and she did not eat, she stayed in her feeding tub for a LONG time an i finally put her away at 4am this morning thinkin she was gettin cold, she is a slow usually only a hour or 2 though.. so my questions...

How long should i wait for her to eat before putting her away?

How soon should i attempt to feed her again?

And then any other tips on starting to feed FT would be nice to that is the attempt in 2 weeks when we feed again..

I upgraded Aislin's food to a Large mouse last night as well an feared it was to big she proved me wrong with gulping it down with no problems within 10min..

have you tried feeding her in her own tub? (as long as it doesnt have aspen or any other type of substrate besides newspaper) If you have your animal on newspaper try it in there...you can leave it in there over night and if she doesnt eat well atleast u tried the over night thing.

AS FOR WHEN to feed her again...i would wait another week...they wont starve in a week..BUT will hopefully give them enough time to get HUNGRY and strike at that mouse!

SOME snakes are just pickey and the one GOOD thing to do is ask the person who sold it to you HOW they would feed them before they sold it to you...its possible that they are used to being fed a certain way and are waiting for you to do it the same way. ALL of my snakes are picky and require some special way of feeding.

Good Luck and i hope this helped.

      Re: Did not eat

She has eaten the last 2 times i have fed her as for the tub it is HER tub we got for her when we got her.

there is nothing in it when i feed just her an mouse.

i am killing and feeding the way he did besides feeding more often he fed 1 time a month an we have moved them to every 2 weeks,

we have had her now since October 18th and she completed shed on the November 10th.

Last feed she ate 1 large mouse and then another large mouse 2days later because the mice were so small i should have bumped her up then :/

So only new thing this time is a small rat instead of Mice..

AN yes that is helpful i will feed her next week when i feed our new little guy as long as he dont eat me first..

Snakes definitely are picky. I don't have a set feeding schedule because someone always won't eat on that particular day. Don't worry if they won't eat when you want them to, they are probably just not ready. Give em another week or so and try again.

            Re: Did not eat

Sounds like your doing everything right. Some of mine will eat if I just lay the prey item in with them. Others I have to dangle and shake the prey item. There are just a few that I have to hold the prey by the scruff and almost put in against the snakes nose to get them to eat. My albino female didn't want to take frozen/thawed at all. I tried everything, leaving it over night, shaking it, putting her in different enclosure, dangling the prey until my arm was fatigued. I tried holding it buy the scruff with my hemostats, and bam! She took it and has been eating every time since. Just like Pa Pa E said, give it a week and try her again. Hope this helps.

Here is a video from the boaphile. Notice how he will put the nose of the rat to the nose of the boa.

ok i am a bit confused here...on the 1st post you said it was your first time feeding her...now ur saying you have fed her twice before...then u said u have fed her in a separate tub and was afraid of her getting cold so u moved her back to her tank...

and fed once a month is usually when u have a monster of a boa that is pounding 3lb rabbits...i am wondering why the owner was feeding her once a month...this IS a baby right? you said you are feeding it mice....so it has to be. I feed all my 09s once a week and my 08s every 7-10 days and my 07s once every 2 weeks.

I just say...let it be and she will end up eating cause she WILL be hungry!

I agree with E. Boas aren't BPs, they won't go months without eating as long as they are being kept in the right environment with regards to temp, humidity, etc. Wait another week, give her the little zombie rat dance and she will probably eat. Also, I don't handle a snake if it isn't eating for me. The less stress on the snake, the sooner it will eat again.

                  Re: Did not eat

ok thanks a ton guys for all the answers i will wait an see how it goes this coming Sunday,

Sorry to confuse you BigPaPa i meant it was the first time feeding her a rat she had been eating mice when we first got her an fed that to her the first couple feedings, I have NO idea why the guy was only feeding one time a month.

I feed in a tub not the tank that she lives in i moved her back in her tank with no food cause i was worried she would get cold and it had been about 8 hours (i fell asleep waiting for her hence the 4am return to tank).. hope that clears up some stuff..

She is a year old making her an 08 i think..

The guy i got her from did no temp or humidity gauges an has had snakes for years so i really have no idea what his idea of care for them was. when i explained our set up with the gauges and lights we were using he said we were spoiling them. /shrug

Aislin is my small one and she is supposed to be the same age as the big one Trinity but she is like half the size if not a little smaller they are supposed to be sisters so i don't know..
