  • [Feeding Issue] Update on vet visit for both Guyana's

So I took both of my Guyana’s, male and female, to the vet today b/c they keep regurgitating their meals. When Dr. Harris came back from checking the feces, she asked me if I wash my hands really well b/c they were riddled with parasites, ring worms and pin worms!!!! She even told me that she was going to save the sample for her interns that show up tomorrow b/c it had so many. She wanted to show them how many they can have. They guy I got them from said they were healthy and they guy he got them from said they were treated with flagyl. Bull crap my vet said!! The proper treatments were made and I have a vet visit in two weeks for the other treatment. I’m out of town in one week, so she said I could leave them with her next week for the time I’m gone(two weeks), and she would treat them. Only $15 a day for the both of them. Well worth it. I don’t want to have sick snakes alone while I’m gone. The total bill today was $200. I called the guy who sold them to me and he said he wants to make things right. Said he could either give me a cb Bolivian red tail, or get some cash together to cover the cost. I would love a Bolivian, but I’m a little hesitant about getting another snake from him. I’m actually not going to go that route. wouldn’t want to risk it. Anyway, Dr. Harris said they should be doing much better now with the treatments. My male should weigh 550g more that what he is and my female about 350g more. So they have a long recovery, but I’m sure it will come soon enough. Thanks for reading.

Glad they are getting the treatment they need. Sure you vet will tell you this, but don;t be inclined to go mad with the feeding to build them up, start small and gradually increase

Oh I would definitely make sure they were fed appropriate size meals. She only told me where she would like to see them at. Just indicating that they do need to gain weight, but not in an unsafe manner. She did tell me to start with a small meal after the treatment, then wait two weeks to make sure it stays down, then get them on a regular schedule, but not to over feed. I'm not interested in getting them to size in a hurry, I want to make sure it is done right. Thank you for pointing that out though, it's very important to ease them into eating again.

I would say feed them something at least 3 sizes down from what would normaly be suitable for there size. i.e. if they wre eating say large mice, go for a fuzzy or even a pinkie for a few feeds, and build up from there. Their gut flora is bound to be very diminshed, and they just won't be able to digest a 'normal' sized meal.

You can also get some 'Carnivore Care' supplement which will help them generate sufficient gut flora

It's nice to hear they are getting treated and will be ok. It must of been pretty bad if the vet wants to show it off... I definitly would take the cash too.

Probably not a good idea to feed them for another 3-4 weeks also.... they will need time to rehydrate . The number one cause of death from regurge is due to dehydration... Give them, plenty of water and give the antiparasitic drugs some time to work ..... then feed them really small meals

Thanks everyone. I decided i'm going to let the vet board them while i'm out of town. I just don't want to risk them not getting what they need while i'm gone. Plus they need their second treatment during the time I will be gone. The male was eating a small(60g) rat, so maybe a 20g pup? And the female was eating a weaned rat(35g) so maybe a fuzzy rat or hopper mouse?? I wasn't planning on feeding them until jan 6ish or so. Should I soak them every other day until I hand them off to the vet or every day to get them hydrated? Thanks again everyone.
