need help asap

just recently i noticed my red tail boa has like a scab/scar right before its snout...what should i do? this is the first time this has happened and im worried

Sorry to hear that . Whattype of cage is the boa in ? When did you notice this scab / scar ? What are you feeding ( live or frozen/thawed) ?

currently my boa is in a glass enclosure i am in the process of building a melamine enclosure.i noticed it right after it had shed which was about a week ago and i feed it fresh killed rats

hmmm....thats weird....do you have any light fixtures in that tank?anything it could have got burnt on.? i dont know how it could have gottin it from shedding..

Hi salmonedboa,

Like SnakeDan said above, more info would help alot.

Without all the correct info it becomes a guess. My guess would be you have something in the snakes cage , maybe a screen top that the snake is rubbing its nose on. If you can find what the snake is rubbing its nose on alot, ditch it. Screen on top of glass tanks are known to cause this problem, and it can also lead to a nasty case of mouth rot.

Just watch it close and if it starts bleeding or gets pusy take the snake to a vet as soon as you can.

Give as much info and maybe pics and I am sure we could help more.

ok well it is in a 60 gal screen top, no light fixture inside and i think it might be rubbing it nose on the screen when it stretches to the top.thanks for all the help and i will get pics up as soon as i can.

Have you noticed the snake rubbing its nose against the screen top ? Do you have anything sharp in the tank with him/her ? If yes to either he/she could have cut itself on a sharp corner or something .
Is it still bleeding? That is the most important thing. You can use an antibiotic cream as long as it doesn't have a pain killer in it.

well there is nothing sharp inside of the cage,and i have noticed that it does rub against the screen top and it hasnt bled yet nor has it pussed

If it is just a small rub , be sure to keep an eye on it but don't freak out , it may go away with no ill effects . Just be sure the cage is always clean and a trip to the vet to get checked for mouthrot might be in order. In the mean time just watch it real close , to be sure it doesn't get worse.

Like Snake dan said, you could use antibiotic cream on the cut, just please make sure if you do use it, do not get the cream in his heat pits, on his eyes or on his lips.. That could cause other problems..

But the first thing you need to do is put somthing under the screen so the snake does not rub any more...I would use a some burlap or A good silk screen... If you just staple or tape it to the frame of the top it will still let in air but the snake will not be able to rub on the metel screen... If you don't get the snake to stop it will not heal...
Oh and do you have hides on both side and in the middle...
This somtimes will help with the rubbers...
Plus also alot of snakes rub becuase they know no food is just drop in so they try to get out... So may-be the snake is a lil' under fed... Just some thoughts...

Neosporin works excellent WITHOUT PAIN RELEIVER It promotes healing and in my own personal opinion, reduces scarring.
