  • Why wont he Eat?????

Not long ago We Rescued A Boa from a lady who would take and burn the poor thing. When we first got him he was a little mean temperd. But he would Eat Just about anything we put in his cage, Now about 6month's latter im haveing trouble getting it to eat "It Has been about 3 months" I keep ofering a small rat to it but it just coils up and wont touch it. So what should i do? Im stumped He seems to be healthy and most all the burn are gone just some scares left..
As far as age go's i have no clue He is about 5'7" and most of the scares are down his back closer to the tail area.. Cage is a 55 gal fish tank its about 80 degrees during the day and drops to around 75 at night. Humidty is up and down between 45 to 60 I fill his big water bowl every other day. As far as i can see there are no pest problims. He was eating Live hamsters when we picked him up. I was told it was because it was winter out But if that was the case would he not stay sleeping or very little activity? He is very active I have read everything i can get on snakes trying to figure it out... The closest Herp Vet to me is about 5 or 6 hours away. my local vet couldent evan guess at what type he was....

I Have tried Hamsters,Mice,Degu's,And Rats Dead and alive he just coils up in a corner, And I have never done a force feeding before "that's what the pet store owner told me to do" The people that I got him from told me that it was a rescue from some lady who was burning him but I thought it might be bite marks...When we first got him About 6 month ago he ate very good for about two months then it just stopped! The only change I made was the bedding he went from none to " for lake of better words" Crushed walnut shell's that's what the local pet store sell's.."it's the only one for 2hrs in any dir." thanks
    patiently waiting for advice

    Hi,
Did he stop eating around the time you put the walnut shell substrate in ? At any rate I would move him off of that stuff. The walnut shells might draw out the humidity .Try plain old news paper . If you keep a damp towel on top of the screen cover it will help maintain the humidity.
Also check for mites very closely, they can cause all sorts of problems.
    Good Luck

Dan; You know it was soon after that..... ??? I now have removed all the walnut shell and examind all three snakes closly "with a magnifying glass" looking for mites and ticks thank god i found none!... I have him in with a Ball python of same size just started to try that see if the compation will help.

I'm going to use a Storage tub to feed them seperatly is this a good idea???

      Well thanks for your Info

:-/Jim, i sugest you seperate the two snakes , its not best you keep snakes together like that and also your keeping them both in the 55gal?? thats not enough room to start for a boa of 5ft, and a Ball python.. Also if the boa has been bittin then more than likely he is freaked out about that and thats why he wont eat.. but also some snakes wont eat when people keep them together like that.. As far as feeding goes try not to feed so many diffrent things so close together wait awhile befour offering anything and as far as hamsters go, man thats not cool.. he might have gottin hooked on those.. I would wait a few then try a F/T small rat that has been scented in old hamster bedding and with its nose cut open, and make sure the other snake hasnt been in with him for awhile.. Leave it in over night and see what happens. Try doing this at night when no one is around. Does he have anykind of hide house??? And deffinately get him on diffrent bedding if not newspaper try cypress mulch. Just my 2 cents worth... :-/

          Re: Why wont he Eat?????

It is not really a good idea to house two different species together as each one can carry totally different pathogens which the other may not have any natural resistance to. It would be better for both snakes to be housed seperatly for sure that way they won't make each other sick. The feeding tub however is a great idea that way the snakes won't alwasys wonder if food is coming when you open the cage and possibly strike at you.
Good luck hope your boa eats soon.

            Re: Why wont he Eat?????

You really should seperate the two snakes. They are two different species and could pass on pathogens that the other one is immune to. While you might think of it as a companion, it is likely causing stress to both of them. I would never recommend force feeding, it is basically a last resort and needs to be done by someone with the proper experience. As long as the snake is healthy, a few meals is not going to hurt any unless you notice a decrease in weight. The temperatures are a little low. They should be between 86-88 on the warm end, this could be a cause also. Are you feeding live or pre-killed? If live, I would recommend switching to pre-killed prey. Boas usually are great feeders unlike Ball Pythons. It could have happened because of the winter if the temperatures were not kept up properly. Local vets usually do not have the experience, if any, with reptiles. A 5-6 hour trip to a qualified herp vet is not bad at all, it's well worth it. Also, I feed in a seperate tote (rubbermaid container). Hope this helps.

              Re: Why wont he Eat?????

Oh yeah , you should try to get those temps up to about 88* hot and 80* cool side. That may help him feed easier for you.
And I agree completely on the seperate feeding enclosure , thats the only way to go. that way there is no chance of him ingesting any substrate.
              Hope this helped,
