  • my red tail went lazy

i have had my boa for about three weeks now. the second day after i got him he ate. but then around the 6th of march he went to the cool side of the tankand just lays there. he shows no intrest in food or water. i did notice that his eyes are were turnning white so I figured that he was about to shed but today they are clear again, and he has not shed. he is very freindly but right now he is very moody and hisses at me alot. does anybody have any suggestions?

You will find the skin in the cage in a couple days... If at that point your snake still is refusing food and being pissy then write back and we will help... oh ya by the way your snake is in shed alot of snake go off feed when in shed....

It usually takes at least two days to a week for them to shed after their eyes clear up. Just wait a while and you will find the skin in the tank and he will be back to being friendly. While in shed snakes vision is impaired so they tend to be more defensive as they can not really see what is going on around them. Oh and he will also be ready to eat again after his shed. Hope this helps. If he still has not gone back to normal after his shed do as red said and let the people here know.

        Hi,
Be sure your cool side are at least 82 degree's or it may be to cool, this can cause all kinds of problems.
I usally raise the humidity the week of the shed.

I check the temps in the center at the floor warmside and also put a sticky cheap fish tank thermometer on the cool side at the floor  if it don't stay 82 I turn up the thermostat a bit..

this cage has three thermometers and one thermostat sensor ,its very important to be sure the entire cage stays at least 82 this is much easier with melanine or in this case formica like wood cages.
glass can be a pain, thats another post..

Hey Doug .. I keep mine at a low end of 78/82 np here. As long as you maintain a high end and the gradient on through also to the hot end being like 85/88...[ with basking of like 90/92 when doing this temp range] OR some use 88/90 for hot end. The snake won't get sick from it at all. It's when people go and keep their snakes at like below 82 ie hot end is 82 that they wind up with sick snakes. Long as ya gradient to the hotter temps.. It shouldn't be a problem at all.

That's why I love melamine caging. It is NOT a problem to heat OR humidify at all ;D
