  • Need some info

Hi, just needed to ask a few question's. I've had my bci for about 2 months now. Just recently like 2 week's ago, i noticed little tiny white bug's floating in my snake's water dish. I heard that mite's are black, and they kinda look like pepper. As soon as i found them, i replaced the substrate, bleached, and disinfected my whole encloseure, sprayed the entire room with provent=a=mite, and sprayed the tank. I'm using repti bark for substrate. Tonight i looked again, and the same problem, white tiny little speck's, that jump around >. Repeated the whole process again.I check my snake everytime i take him out which is nightly, except after feeding, and i cant find any mite's on him what so ever. Anybody know whats up with this. Is it the substrate?.. I have a wood log in there as well, i peeled the bark off, disinfect that as well, even spray it done from time to time. Anybody know what these little bugger;s are.

    Thx for reading.. b16.gif

I would guess thats the bugs are coming from the bark or the log. Did you get your log from outside or purchase it? Little bugs like mites love to live in bark like this. If you bought your substrate from a pet store the has mites than theres a chance that they live in the bag of repti bark that you bought also. I would use paper towls or newspaper for awile after you clean the cage and spray it with provent a mite let it settle for about a hour then put your snake and water back in.

The white jumping bugs are mites. These mites like wood.

So yes it is the wood stuff that has the mites.

Thx for the info.. Yea i did get the tree branch from outside, i peeled the bark off,and sanded it down smooth. I spray it down everytime i disinfect, but i guess they always find a way back. I'm gonna toss it. Any suggestion's on what to use, so she could climb. Thx..

As far as substrate, I use artificial turf.

As for climbing, you could see if the pet stores have anything for reptiles to climb on that isn't made of wood.

Boas don't have to have anything to climb on. In the cage that I built I built a shelf 18'' from the the bottom. It hard to find branches sturdy enough for a big boa to climb on. If you want somthing now I would use gapevine wood you can buy it at petsmart but it can be expensive though.

You can get a branch off a healthy live tree.. Also I don't know when it is but those buggers die off in the winter so if you get a branch then it will not have them... also the way the stuff in the pet store get's to be mite free is steeming it or boiling it... disenfecting it will kill of the germs but that is all somtimes it will kill off bugs but not all the time... the boiling water will though... but I would be safe and get one from a pet store...

What ya mean?? Your boa is not a trapeze artist at all then like one I had was..LOL [ This is Angus....I no longer have him due to a mishap while he was breeding :{ ]
Umm.. We moved the light fixture once we couldn't get him to stop doing this btw after we found him doing it also.

I love that pic never seen one do that before. One of my snakes loves to climb but she would always knock down her branches. I spent $50 on some grapevine wood and it didnt work to well so built her a shelf.

LOL. This male was a great personality/character all the time we had him. He was always doing something that got attention. He was also my husband's favorite snake out of all that i have ever kept. I am still trying to get my husband to attach to one of the "few others" that i keep hehe.
here's another pic of him up high also. he did this after we moved the wire I think.. Seemed to always like being up.. prolly thought he was an arboreal ss of boa hahaha

;DThose are some great pictures.Wow Lori, you have a true trapeze artist there..I would never think a snake that size could shimmy and lay on a fixture cord...I have a Colombian Red Tail and she thinks she is a Tree snake. As long as I have had her,she is climbing on anything and everything.I put a wood bar going across the tank so she can hang out or do whatever, and she hasnt left here bar since. She lives up there..Im thinken she was an Emerald Tree Boa in her past life.I'll get a picture of her soon hanging around...Hey doug,Where did you get that black cage that covers that light?

I seen on discovery chanel once that I don't know what island exatly it was I think they said it was paruvian's but they get in the top of cave's and hang like tree pythons and catch bat's as they fly by.. They are real fat snakes because they can eat as much as they want...
